True. Latter-day Roman legions they are not.
By way of slight mitigation, I must say that they had poor leadership and crap equipment.
They did okay against bedouin on camels in Libya, but ran for the hills when they had to face a real army. For those who have not seen a movie called Lion of the desert I recommend it highly. It is fairly historically accurate. Gadaffi spent a motza on this movie, including recreating some of the Italian vehicles and aircraft of the era.
