damshoppin: Waxwings, about 30 invaded my garden today..

Oh wow! You are soooo lucky!! Do you know, with a life long love of all things wild, I have NEVER seen a waxwing!!!! crying

Made bird pudding the other night - the birds love it.... even the woodpecker is back! Saw the red squirrel on the oaks just beyond the bottom of the garden the other day. I re-positioned my squirrel feeder, cleaned it out and topped it up with yummy sunflower seeds and peanuts, but this squirrel just doesn't want to know! (had one coming into the garden a couple of years ago getting the nuts from the squirrel feeder).

The siskins and the goldfinches are back though, which adds a wee bit of colour to the garden.

Sorry I haven't been on recently - will still be around from time to time though - keep posting - it's always interesting wave

It's only over the last few winters that Waxwings have been coming around here. They used to hang around the Norfolk area..

What a wonderful thread -

all the snow birds are down from the north - the local American bald eagles are nesting with a new baby and I have an escaped peacock looking for a hen trapesing through my back yard.

We have a new cat on the block...the little devil has been shimmying up the trees when the birds are on the feeders. Got my grandson to put the feeders further out on the narrower branches in an attempt to stop the cat getting to them.

It is a little sad with the decline of wildlife in the wild - I think zoos do provide a valuable service to humanity and animals.

Some of the zoo breeding programs with successful reintroduction of the species back into the wild a good thing. One animal at a time.... or two as the case may be? blushing

wave I know its hard to believe
but today we have roses blooming in
our garden.
The Alps are full of snow but at ground
level we are having such wonderful mild
weather.
The Furen winds are playing a big part in
that. I am sure we will get plenty of snow
before long.
Happy New Yr.

Yeah, I know that they are found in Norfolk. Funny eh! I lived there until I was about 22 but never saw one! Was even out actively bird-watching for a few years there (going to RSPB hides etc).

Grrrrrrrrrr mumbling I know what you mean. There is one over the road that sometimes comes into my garden stalking the birds. Wouldn't mind so much if he was a stray who had no "mum" to feed him big bowls of Kittykat, but he DOES! I always have to run out and scare him away... and he repays me by pooing all over my front garden! Lovely!

... Yeah, I can't quite remember the story now. I think it was the filming of baby polar bears in the den, which I would guess is completely impossible to film in the wild... I know that I am probably in the minority here, but I say "fare enough". I would rather watch new-born polar bears in a den in a zoo, than not at all. dunno

It's funny, a little bit because snow birds also mean all the tourists visiting from other of the United States for a little sunshine. The telephone lines and stop light signs are covered - every space filled with a bird - could be a scene out of Alfred Hichcock's Birds movie. We have a lot of different types of birds that migrate down here for winter.

The bald eagles are making a big comeback - we humans have made some stupid toxins and pollutants. and the peacocks arrived because we are a gateway city to illegal trafficking in exotic wildlife - and escapees from our aviary at the zoo - Hurricane Andrew destroyed it in 1992 -

Yes indeed Roses beauties too.
Still the snow is on the way, all the
crews are busy now at night preping the
mountain ski runs. So lots of the white
stuff up there.
I just wonder if the hibernation will be
affected by the mild weather at the moment.
