Did anyone watch "Autumnwatch" tonight? It is only on for four nights this time, so every night counts!

They are up near Beauly, north of Inverness. I used to live up that way, so the entire program was making me ache with homesickness, esp when they were showing the pine martins. When I lived in Wester Ross, they would come and feed from the fence, or sometimes the kitchen windowsill every night.... peanuts and jam, or sometimes bits of salmon! The kitchen window was open one evening, and "Peanut Willie" got a bit bold and came in my kitchen!! laugh It was one of those incredible experiences that I will never forget. I had to be very careful though because I was cooking for residential guests (at the outdoor centre where I worked), and all the guest were there - mostly Americans. They didn't realise that cute little Peanut Willie would have taken their fingers off without another thought! doh Pity I don't have the photos to show you (they are all on old Kodak prints). Have some of pine martins outside a holiday cottage in Ardnamurchan a few years back. We were feeding them every night... amazing!

I might re-name him "Etching" I bought him when he was about 20 weeks old and trained him..I took up falconry about 18 years ago..There should be lots more berries around than there are, I haven't seen a Blackbird around here for a month..The wet weather we had in summer took it's toll..

laugh Yeah, "Etchings" would be a good name! I have always wanted to have a go at falconry. Looked a golden eagle in the eye in Perth shopping centre once (they were promoting the local falconry centre I think). That was absolutely amazing! He was just so "cool"....just sat there completely content, watching everybody and everything!! I was about 1' away from him! bowing bowing

...Yeah, I haven't had any blackbirds in the garden this summer either. Very strange.

"Space Dive" on BBC2 tonight (Sunday 4th November) at 8.30pm

I watched this live, and it blew me away! I was born too late, to appreciate the moon landing, so this was completely inspirational for me!

Nah. Doing it naked without a parachute singing 'I am what I am' would be inspirational.

A friend of mine works for the forestry, apparently lots of Blackbirds eggs failed this year. Maybe the wet weather was the cause?

....Yeah, probably.

I had a strange thing happen today. I mentioned that I had had no blackbirds in the garden throughout the entire Summer. Well today I was out there lopping bits off the leylandii hedge to neaten it up a bit, and when I came in there were SEVEN blackbirds sitting on top of the bit of hedge that I'd cut! Males and females! They seemed to be acting very teritorial and were squabbling amongst themselves... the only explanation is that their nesting area (they like to nest in the hedge) had had a "makeover" so they were vying for property! laugh The same thing happened last year but with sparrows. They went crazy after my neighbour had cut the hedge for me. They seemed so excited and were in and out of the hedge for days afterwards! Weird huh! Hope the blackbirds aren't going to start nesting just yet!!! uh oh Waaaaaaay too cold cold cold
