JeanKimberley: It's funny, a little bit because snow birds also mean all the tourists visiting from other of the United States for a little sunshine. The telephone lines and stop light signs are covered - every space filled with a bird - could be a scene out of Alfred Hichcock's Birds movie. We have a lot of different types of birds that migrate down here for winter.

The bald eagles are making a big comeback - we humans have made some stupid toxins and pollutants. and the peacocks arrived because we are a gateway city to illegal trafficking in exotic wildlife - and escapees from our aviary at the zoo - Hurricane Andrew destroyed it in 1992 -

Wow...funny how nature adapts itself! Interesting stuff...thanks wave

Sailfree1: Happy New Yr J.
Yes indeed Roses beauties too.
Still the snow is on the way, all the
crews are busy now at night preping the
mountain ski runs. So lots of the white
stuff up there.
I just wonder if the hibernation will be
affected by the mild weather at the moment.

"the hibernation" dunno confused

... Yeah, we have a couple of inches of snow at the moment and we're due for -10 degrees next week so I think that will definitely kill off my poor little baby aubretia flower that is blooming!!!! laugh

Sorry I haven't been on here for a while - I am still interested in what everyone's got to say. Am just not on as much as I used to be. Keep posting though! peace

DON'T FORGET!

THE RSPB'S BIG GARDEN BIRDWATCH IS TAKING PLACE 26th & 27th JANUARY!!

It's good fun, and you are contributing to this annual "stock-taking for birds" event!

Saw a new birdie in my garden today! Don't know that I've ever seen one of these before...it was a male Brambling, in his winter "disguise". Didn't know what he was at first so took some quick photos and identified him from those. They are not rare, but are usually only in the uk over winter, and don't usually frequent gardens, so I was lucky to see him. Handsome little bird.

Needless to say, my photos are not as good as these ones!! laugh Need to win the lottery and get myself a better camera! doh

Here's the link for the RSPB BIG GARDEN BIRDWATCH:

http://www.rspb.org.uk/birdwatch/

There is a new incentive this year. If you actually register to do it, then you get a £5.00 off coupon for their shop. It's actually a very good offer... I bought a supply of 50 fat balls and with the £5.00 off they are only costing 18.9p each...which is really CHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!! grin

wave Hi Jan,
Guess what ?
I showed a Pal of mine what you said.
conversing He said he developed a remote controlled Reconisssance/Attack Helium filled Electric powered near silent Drone that travbels at over 100mph, looks like an Eagle and can carry a 20Kg bombload for the Army, so YOUR Hand Granade idea is ON.grin devil

The range, rigged for weather recognaissance is up to 1,000 miles and I saw the latest re-usable high speed Stealth version being tested by dropping a 20Kg R/C Flour bomb on a fixed Target the other day.
It is very accurate and he says we could even disguise a suicide version to look like a bird to avoid detection so look out for a Dive bombing Eagle fromthe sky. wave grin applause rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing tongue

From the description and size approximation 6-7" long it could be a Waxwing. - The Bohemian has a very small crest while other Waxwings have larger crests

Hope that helps

I saw a bird the other morning
never seen one like it before.
It was like a chaffinch at first
but far too big.
Had a long tail with like chevrons
of white on the back end of it.
It was as big as a woodpecker but not
so cool. Only saw it once did not come
back again.
By the way the birds are not feeding here
my bird tray is still full.
doh confused wave

Not a Waxwing, had them visit, this was smaller and less colourful. Waxwings usually flock, this was solitary..I can't find anything in my bird book that resembles it.
