All the snowbirds have arrived in Miami, plus the nesting of the tropical local and exotic birds - and yet the roosters and chickens that escaped from the neighbors yard makes me laugh the most.

I just love traveling through the everglades and seeing the egrets drying their wings. The birds perch by the dozens on the same banyon like tree with wings spread.... it is a sight to behold.

Ziggie20: Hi Jan,
Guess what ?
I showed a Pal of mine what you said.
He said he developed a remote controlled Reconisssance/Attack Helium filled Electric powered near silent Drone that travbels at over 100mph, looks like an Eagle and can carry a 20Kg bombload for the Army, so YOUR Hand Granade idea is ON.

The range, rigged for weather recognaissance is up to 1,000 miles and I saw the latest re-usable high speed Stealth version being tested by dropping a 20Kg R/C Flour bomb on a fixed Target the other day.
It is very accurate and he says we could even disguise a suicide version to look like a bird to avoid detection so look out for a Dive bombing Eagle fromthe sky.

damshoppin: Not a Waxwing, had them visit, this was smaller and less colourful. Waxwings usually flock, this was solitary..I can't find anything in my bird book that resembles it.

a Brambling? dunno

I had them in my garden during all that snow. Even managed to "bag one" for my RSPB birdwatch. I did it for an hour and he arrive on the 59th minute! peace yay

I keep meaning to find a way of posting some photos on here, but in the meantime I will post this link. If you scroll down you'll see a Brambling. Sometimes they do look as though they have a small crest on their head.

Oh, that sounds wonderful. We have the Cormorants that do that. I once sailed out to a very remote light house. It was quite an eery place, and the only living things that you could see were black cormorants with their wings stretched out...like the souls of dead sailors who had been wrecked on the rocks before the light was erected!!!! Whooooooooaaaaa!
crazy crazy crazy

Sailfree1: I saw a bird the other morning
never seen one like it before.
It was like a chaffinch at first
but far too big.
Had a long tail with like chevrons
of white on the back end of it.
It was as big as a woodpecker but not
so cool. Only saw it once did not come
back again.
By the way the birds are not feeding here
my bird tray is still full.

Ohhhh...confused dunno about that one

I recon it was a very odd female Chaffinch. Apparently they can raise a small crest when they get upset with other birds..(Nice to see you back by the way) We have Redpolls around here too.

Did anyone see Nigel Marven's Whale adventure last night on channel 5 at 8pm? It was the first part of four.

It was really interesting and showed other creatures too on his travels as he drove parallel with the grey whales, along the coastal areas, as they made their long journey.

Oh well...have been looking on and off for 45 mins tonight, and haven't seen the comet. Eventually saw a lot of tiny little twinkly stars, the belt of Orion, 2 planes, and a possible UFO!! ... one of the small tinkly stars travelling from north to south completely horizontally at high speed (and from where I was standing, it was ABOVE the moon, so couldn't have been the comet) confused transport dunno

We get very clear skies here
the other night it was so beautiful
a real starry night.
We see the ISS on a regular basis here
but did not see Comet! Will keep eyes
open for it.
The birds are happy now and have demolished
the food the lot gone. So need more bags for
the trees this week.

Hi everyone
...would love to see the space station go by!! Someone told me ages ago that on the NASA site (I think if was the nasa site confused ) you can put in your postcode and it will tell you when the ISS is passing you by! I never got around to it, but I should!

... Yeah, since Thursday it's been cloudy here too, and the weather is set to get worse, so not much hope of seeing anything for a few days yet.

Sail... the birds have eaten me out of house and home too! Need to replenish the stocks! I think they eat better than I do!! doh laugh Woodpecker has been here a lot every day since I made those home-made bird pudding a few weeks ago. He can't get enough of them! He ignores the bought fat-balls and you can see him looking around everywhere for the home-made ones! laugh Didn't have the umph to make a whole load of new ones so just smeared lard over the tree trunk in the lawn. Got the tree trunk from the woods about a year ago, and stood it up in the lawn and it looks completely natural...just like it's been there all along. I sprinkle seed on it, but I also rub the lard on it and the birds love it. It's very close to the kitchen window and the woodpecker doesn't bother at all. I wash up there with the window open and my music on, and he's still not bothered! It's lovely to watch happy place happy place happy place I planted some little purple pansies and miniature daffs around the tree trunk last year and they are coming up already.

Your tree trunk with the flowers planted around its base sounds a lovely idea, perhaps you could take a photo when they're in flower for us to see? daisy

Thanks..I DO actually have photos of it with the flowers out and also the woodpecker feeding on it etc. Just got to get around to figuring out how to post a photo on a forum! It would certainly make this forum a bit more interesting if folks could post photos.
