During the late 18th and 19th centuries, large numbers of convicts were transported to the various Australian penal colonies by the British government. One of the primary reasons for the British settlement of Australia was the establishment of a penal colony to alleviate pressure on their overburdened correctional facilities. Over the 80 years more than 165,000 convicts were transported to Australia.
The number of convicts pales in comparison to the immigrants who arrived in Australia in the 1851–1871 gold rush. In 1852 alone, 370,000 immigrants arrived in Australia. By 1871 the total population had nearly quadrupled from 430,000 to 1.7 million people. The last convicts to be transported to Australia arrived in Western Australia in 1868.

I have been reading up on the lost generation of Aboriginal children, how are the Aborigines treated now, or is this something the Ozzies don't talk about?

We certainly do Tomcat.. ask away, and I am happy to answer..

As for how our indigenous are treated now... that is very debateable..

Generally, ( because I cannot speak for every single white Aussie)
it is well recognised that we are not the original land owners.

Big chunks of Aus. has been handed back, but with restrictions.

A lot of indigenous have no hope and are hopelessly addicted to booze

A lot of indigenous have no idea of their heritage, have lost their culture, and sit in the middle quite lost, between our progressive world and their non education, and non working world.

There are small positive sides to everything tho... a start , if you will, of education, trying to revamp culture, and languages, healthcare, drink prohibition, restrictions of their dole cheques etc.

The new generation are going to succeed. That is a good thing.

Thanks for replying Meri, I an not trying to knock oz in any way, many great nations have indigenous populations which have been badly treated. And lets face it the UK is no saint.

It's good that oz is trying to redress the problem.

No worries mate... by talking and discussing around issues, they get fixed, not by hiding from it all. And yeah, some of these issues are really bad... but still, prefer to talk about it rather than pretend its not there...

Never thought you were knocking anything, and the more questions you and everyone else asks, I am happy to answer...and I reckon others would too...

Everyone has a take on issues, it depends on how closely they work or be with or socialise, with indigenous, not just see them on the streets.

It also depends on how much reading and listening to news stories, is done... I read and listen a lot... I also work with indigenous, directly and I guess I have a fairly good overview on things.
