Well, he did have to give up on DC power for distribution, no matter how many animals he had electrocuted to try prove that AC was "dangerous". blues

It's funny how people can be, when there's profit at stake, even if they're wrong. uh oh

Only now is there any merit for DC for mass transmission, with the available technology, well over 100 years later.

Those poor dogs, horses, and anything else he could procure to electrocute, simply for ego and greed. moping

kidatheart: Yeah, it was rather ruthless in the early days, all that mattered was money and fame. Although, I don't know if much has changed in the general scheme of things for many.

From what I have read about Edison, he was not out for money and fame. He was one of those odd people who did things because he liked to make things better for everyone.

Edison had the greatest number of patents ever held for his inventions, until a Japanese managed to patent his microchips more often. Edison did it to make sure that no one else claimed his inventions as their "Patented Right" and reaps the financial rewards for things he had done. Happened a lot in those days.

Okay, he did make some money out of it but it did not really matter to someone who had enough already. And it allowed him to keep devoting more time to inventing more things.

Chep patented the pallet that is used so often in industry and it took many years before anyone else could make them without paying exhorbitant royalties. My brother developed a pallet system that he used for moving bricks around building sites. Massive savings in loading up large amounts and easily getting them into awkward spots on building sites. After 5 years with the Patents Office and costing lots, he said "What the...... I have made it easier for everyone and I couldn't be bothered anymore."frustrated frustrated

Mercedes-Benz developed the inertial real safety belt in every car now, ABS braking, "box-compartment" design for crashes and the "lazy" cylinders in engines. And they made sure that they produced them in sufficient numbers so nobody could patent them because these improvements were more beneficial for everyone rather than someone making lots of money from their inventions (patent rules had changed over the years).

Ford Motor Company patented the V8 engine in 1923. So many other motor companies were producing them years before but they patented them first. And so everyone else had to stop making them unless they wanted to pay royalties, if Ford would give them the rights.

The patent expired in 1948 and Chevrolet brought out the best ever design. And Ford can still not compete with the Chevy V8 for durability and pure sound.thumbs up thumbs up thumbs up

Well, I've watched a few documentaries about the early days of electricity, as well as done a lot of reading, it's of great interest to me. I have to say, Edison and Westinghouse were both egomaniacs, and both filthy rich.

Chep is still the largest pallet company on the planet, and a friend of mine, who's staying with me right now, works for them in Vancouver. They're a decent company to work for, which is as big a part of them being the biggest, not just holding patent rights for a period of time.

Mercedes makes oodles of money, they don;t have to have the rights to everything they design or build, because they build a quality product. I can't say the same on the ML series SUVs, or anything else they stamped their name on when they got into bed with Chryco, it's simply trash.

Henry Ford was another egomaniac, and at one time the world's richest man, and a control freak. Look up P.L.Robertson, and the superior screw head design he had, that was basically "barred" from the US market, because of Ford.

Ummm, if you mean the Chevy small block, it didn't come out until 1955, and although long lived, it wasn't the best V8, and inferior to a lot of Ford engines, period. Look at the the Ford SOHC 427, or the Boss 429, or any of the 385 or 335 family engines, far superior to the SBC or BBC. Even a GM engineer is quoted as saying a Ford cylinder head was the best he'd ever seen when talking about the canted valve 335/385 heads. Can't remember if it was Harley Earl or Duntov.

The only sad part is, Ford didn't build their best in huge numbers, but even the run of the mill small and big blocks are superior, just a little more expensive. I've had quite a few from both makes, and still do, but more Ford iron by far. cool
