Squirrels ( Archived) (11)

I got up about 7:30 AM and looked out the window because some movement caught my eye. It was a Squirrel running up a tree and it looked like it had something in its mouth. I watched it for a while as it scampered through the tree tops and saw that it went to a big clump of leaves in the crotch of a nearby tree about 30 yards above the ground. Then I saw another Squirrel doing the same thing. I got my binoculars and saw that what they were carrying were a mouthful of leaves and twigs to what had to be a nest building project. What amazed me was that they had probably been at it for days and probably started their day long before I woke up. Watching them run up and down a tree trunk with such ease made me feel like a wimp. They are such incredible animals, and so beautiful, I wish I could just pet one without losing a finger and a lot of blood. That is one animal that will never be domesticated.

In the early spring when the trees were starting to put out buds, I saw about 10 Squirrels in the top of a Hickory tree fiesting on them. It was amazing to watch as one Squirrel was hanging from a twig by his hind feet while munching on a bud on a lower twig.

That reminds me of a situation that my father told me.

Once in the field someone got too close to a squirrel and it bit his hand. She dug her teeth and would not let go. The man was bleeding and no one dared to pull the squirrel to not open the wound further.

Finally a mute woman gestured to ask for a cigarette, which added more confusion to the scene. She grabbed the squirrel by the tail, and when she finally had a lit cigarette, put it out in the a**hole of the squirrel. When she did so, the squirrel took a big leap and moved away.

Now you know what to do if you are bitten by a squirrel.laugh

Your story reminds me of when I believe I was in grade school.

Anyhow my step-father was out hunting for small game.

He found a baby red squirrel laying on the ground so he brought it home.It just barely had it's eyes open so we put it in a cage, bottle fed it and when it got older we contacted a game warden who took it to a rescue place.

I enjoyed see the teeshirts that have a wanted poster look to it with a photo of a squirrel -

they are my favorite rodent

they can wreak havoc on telephone lines, wiring and other things they chew on... to say nothing about the damage to the gardens

I love the squirrels that live in the park near my workplace. I've been bringing in peanuts for them every day and go out to the park during my breaks to feed them. Some of these guys are pretty tame and there was one particular gray squirrel that was so tame that he let me pet him while he munched on peanuts. I've seen the nests built with leaves up in many of the trees in the park. Last summer, I watched as a male squirrel chased a female up a tree where they both ended up together on a thin branch. She didn't seem to want anything to do with him but having nowhere else to go, he "had his way" with her. Problem is, she was holding on to the branch with her two front feet hanging there for dear life while he's pounding the crap out of her from behind. I was sure she was going to fall with his weight on her backside and all the pounding, but she didn't. At the time I was thinking "typical male". doh rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing

rolling on the floor laughing Was he hanging onto the twig or onto her? She must have had pretty strong paws. Maybe that's the way they do it, who knows. I never saw squirrels do the nasty. I wonder what he said to her afterwards "Was it good for you"?laugh

Not too many tame squirrels around here, but Toronto is full of them. I remember standing in front of a black one, looking down, he looking up, I thought it's going to jump up on me and just moved on. Lovely animals. They look a bicky out of your hand.
