wheelchair rugby (10)

Dec 25, 2012 5:55 PM CST wheelchair rugby
I was on FB earlier & ended up chatting to a very old school friend that I not seen in year but chat to a few times in the year via FB. Anyhow, mid conversation she said that she was playing wheelchair rugby - not having seen this, I did a quick google and then asked what had I missed, ie. what had happened that she was using a wheelchair. She replied, nothing, all was ok - it was just a different variation of the game. Am I being thick here, as I have never come across an able bodied person playing a wheelchair sport? Have not replied to her after that - would it be inappropriate to ask why she wants to play wheelchair rugby when she has use of her legs? Cos that is what puzzles me.

That's odd alright.
Well maybe if able bodied and disabled people both play it then it means that disabled people can compete on level terms with able bodied people, could that be it?

Maybe she enjoys the challenge of having to use a wheelchair to compete?? dunno Can't see any harm in asking her why

On the face of it, it seems wrong. The only other thing I can think of is maybe the team were short players and needed tomake up numbers.

No, you're not being thick, you've just never come across it.

No, it wouldn't be inappropriate to ask - that's how we learn.

But perhaps consider this first - why would someone choose to cycle around a race track when their legs work adequately to run?

Why is one design of wheeled transport considered a skill, whilst another is considered taboo, or that there's something "wrong" with it?

How much of our perspective is clouded by prejudice that poor wee window licking, devil cursed people who can't run use wheelchairs because there's something "wrong" with them, rather than wheelchair use being a chosen skill like cycling? If you can't run, or walk, you could choose to accept the mobility you have, or choose to develop a skill to alter that mobility. Is choosing to use a wheelchair any different from choosing to learn to drive a car to increase mobility?

By choosing to learn the skill of wheelchair use, perhaps your friend is choosing to be inclusive, rather than exclusive and choosing to ignore the taboo surrounding "disability"?

Personally, I don't like the word "disability". I have various traits that are often referred to as "learning disabilities". I don't view those traits as "disabilities", I view them as learning differences.

Others may have skills that I don't, but I have skills that others don't as a result of my 'learning differences". I reject dyscalulia, dyslexia, dyspraxia, or whatever, as being a disability, when nobody says you're "disabled" if you can't draw.

Its all a matter of perspective and I salute your friend for seeing beyond arbitrary bias.
