Fist fight ( Archived) (32)

The US version of the Smithsonian January edition has an article on the fight between Geologists and Environmentalists. Looks like a fist fight might break out soon! laugh

Seems the Geologists (rock study-ers) say this era has not changed since 11,700 years ago so it is still called Holocene era.

The Environmentalist especially in the world of climate change say no - humans have messed with it too much, changed the world and it needs to be termed Anthropocene. The rock layer lovers shout back, with fists in air - you clean air lovers follow pop culture not hard science!

The question is when did humans begin leaving their mark on the planet? with the atomic era or with the agricultural signature?

Which side to you support? angel devil

hahaha.... Seriously!? during my 33 year science-based career (not regulatory) with the EPA I made it a priority to hire geologists when we decommissioned a couple nuclear enrichment plants in Ohio.... they seemed to always know what was natural radiological background levels which we used as bench marks during ambient air quality monitoring work around plant perimeters .... rolling on the floor laughing laugh

I'll know the answer for sure when my kids are riding their bicycles in ever smaller circles on this vanishing piece of land that was once the British Isles.

and you must have told them - it is the journey not the destination that counts.

Well, when the destination is drowning to death I think I better had.

But, I'm being typically pessimistic. Who knows, maybe they'll attach huge hydraulic legs onto all the major cities and we'll all fight each other in resource wars.

.... hydraulic legs? laugh I think the typical bicycle ride in the future of melting polar ice caps will more likely be hoovercrafts and paddle boats.

Venice has done a nice job of dealing with the shrinking land mass issue.

I was living in Independence KY when Fernald was still operating and the doo doo was just making contact with the revolving blades of the air circulating device. My then wife and I took a ride across the Ohio river to Cincinnati and on up to Hamilton Co & drove around the plant to see what all the fuss was about. It looked like a typical Co-op with the checkerboard painted silos and cows walking around.

Were you involved with that at all?

If by doo-doo you mean chit, then, yes, I was only involved with an agreement in principal with D.O.E. for providing oversight while Fernald (and Mound) was shut down and made safe. There was a couple of silos within the fence-line at Fernald that I believe were the largest source for Radon. More than a few pc/l/min escaped the silos whenever they would burp. If you drove around the Fernald plant you were driving on Paddy's Run, a very narrow but scenic road (at one time).

btw: I left epa mostly because I could, and because I don't believe in epa's junk voodoo science used to promote the myth of climate change.

I remember a few news briefs on TV at the time where it was discovered that one of the underground tanks that contained radioactive water was leaking, it had a crack in it and the plant manager said to let it leak down to the crack. I think attitudes like that is what got the place shut down not to mention exposing everybody living around the plant to high doses of radiation. It's too bad that people that do this crap don't wind up in prison.

Climate change is another topic.

Hovercraft, paddle boats, hydraulic legs. In a future with global warming nothing's off the table. But I am comforted by the fact that we'll be sinking from the east, it's good to know that London will be underwater before me.
