Obesity is one of the leading preventable causes of death worldwide. It saddens me when I see or meet people who are morbidly obese and do nothing to change their lifestyle. Being in the medical field, I encounter them a lot and sometimes it makes me angry, sad watching their bodies suffer the consequence of obesity. What comes to your mind when you meet obese people?

They are people, like you and I. Trying to make it in this thing called Life, just like you and I. Struggling with their demons, just like you and I. That's what I think when I see anyone whose challenges display physically. wine

I feel sad........cos I want to comfort them. Same as anyone who has a problem.
It´s all very well saying............CHANGE....but the person who has the addiction.....i.e. to food, drugs, OCD´s, etc......doesn´t find that easy.
I was talking to a lady today who is a district nurse and she was telling me about an old lady she had to go and bath........cos this woman would NOT clean herself. She had filth joining her fingers together......can you imagine!!!!. The woman had a daughter who walked past her every day, but because the woman was so difficult, the daughter had given up. So the district nurse FORCED the woman into the shower!!!!!!! Who wants the responsibility of FORCING someone all the time???? It´s exhausting.

I think people who are saddened, or angered by other people's obesity need to self-reflect.

We only have control over ourselves, not others.

Huh..........I don´t need to self-reflect. I have a dearly beloved person who is extremely over-weight. She has lotsa health problems which I won´t go into, but I love her dearly and no amount of self-reflection will alter the circumstances. AND THAT´S WHY I FEEL SAD!!!!

Exactly my thoughts.

Ws reading your profile OP and surprises me you describe your self a compassionate person, feeling pity for others (as you mention here that makes u so and so sad to see obeses) it's anything but being compassionate.

Me being a healthy woman , but with a BMI that qualifies me as an Obese person...

Do I make you sad as well? so so sad???

Fortunately , there are much more things about me and many other obese people than just our 'size' as a nice carreer , kids , love , and a fullfilled life , ah! and HEALTH. Yes , believe it or not Im very healthy , I do work at 16000 fts height wich requires a good physicall condition.

So . Op , next time u see a girl like me around , please dont feel 'pity' , we don't need it.

Better , take care of your own flaws,. that Im pretty sure there are many .

Well said KayBee! Battle of the bulge comes with middle age spread where metabolism suddenly drops drastically. I conquered mine & and almost 52 now. In many relationships people tend to relax and take one another for granted some even letting their bodies go. With google one can look up their BMI / Calorie intake for age and height and get a digital kitchen scale and google and keep a list of food items per 100g that we eat not going over Half you daily calorie count is how I have conquered middle age spread. Many others before the internet could not do this but now with all the information available on the internet today this is verry possible and can certainly be done as I have done in my case.

I feel sad when the individual is not making an effort to Change his or her lifestyle. It also affects their loved ones and not to mention very expensive given the cormobidity that comes with it.

Such a thing called incentive. Sometimes one just needs enough reason to make that decision to start shedding those kilo's. I say encourage the person but don't ever run them down or critisize them because what goes around will always come around wine

And how do u evaluate that?

Any measurement scale or something?

It's too general op and feeling pity on others is as useless as feeling bad for hungry kids in africa and doing nothing.

Im not implying you should do something for them though.

Generalizations are NEVER GOOD... shows a narrowminded person.

Good luck anyways

It's none of your business if someone doesn't want to change their lifestyle. Just feel sad about your own problems.

It becomes my business when I have to take care of people dealing with this epidemic. If they don't change their lifestyle they come to us, medical professionals for complications that come as a result. Your ignorance is appalling and a major hindrance to the solution.

Tell me then what should I be doing to lose weight? I hike twice a week, go to yoga class twice every week, walk every day and consume half to 3/4 my daily recommended calories.

You need to change nothing. Losing weight is not the goal. Healthy lifestyle does not mean people must be skinny, but people should be "HEALTHY" Body&Soul
Enjoy your life.

seems like you're on the right track. Portion control, increased activity and limit empty calories.
