pedro27: i think they march, because king billy of orange won a battle about 200year ago

The battle of the boyne in 1690 Pedro..where king willy kicked the living bejasus out of King James and his army of ill equipped men..you have bus loads of them bigots from the north that travel down every year and collect the water from the boyne in drums..they bring it home and stage mock battles throwing the water over the roads..they get dressed up and all..sad behaviour altogetherireland

I was up in Belfast last Sunday.
Visiting family of a friend.
Not that it matters, they are Protestants.
They live in a nice suburban part of West Belfast about 5 miles from the city center.
We had a lovely day.
The drive up and down was an eye opener though.
All these little town lands and villages with Union Jacks flying.
To be honest I have no problem with a Union Jack as they are the official flag of a country.
I did feel a bit intimidated and irate at the Red Hand of Ulster flags and UVF flags and bonfires with Tricolours on them.
Now for those that don't know me well here, I don't have a lot of Republican in me (I am proud to be half Irish but have never applauded the IRA or never have and never will vote Sinn Fein) but even I feel that the carry on up North by some sections of society is hate induced, intimidating and incensing people to violence.
I also noted that all the "trouble" spots were very poor looking areas. I guess it is lack of education and an unwillingness in the lower classes to let history go......

Was watching it on the news, most of them are total skangers, one fella shouting at the Nationalists "youse are second class citizens, this is our country".

I'd say the Brits would love to throw the whole lot back to us if they could.

Indeed. And the British State has a very powerful military. Not much use at protecting people, is it?

Capital idea General. Put the British army out on the streets of N.I. to confront unarmed protestors, sure what could go wrong. Would that be 2 Para again or is it a regiment of your 'spotty faced unemployed teenagers' you had in mind laugh

Your missing the point, the point is if we have no military then we are open to attack, by anyone!

I have gone off topic here, i didn't mean that having soldiers back on the streets of N.I. would do any good, i'm on about the republic, keep our military and build it up, it would still be a small army but a deterrent to many.

As for orange men coming out to celebrate a victory that took place hundreds of years ago then let them, it's dying out anyway. The way things are going the Catholics and Protestants will be outnumbered by the atheists and other religions in a few of decades. Much like what is happening here down south.

facetowardsfront: They only have a tiny military to train the militia. There are 3,000,000 people in Switzerland who have military training and weapons. Every year they train about 40,000 more. Their population is only a little over twice ours.

Switzerland is unique though. They have Geographic National Redoubts all over the place. They have a robust, well trained airforce mostly with F-18Cs as air attack. They have an indigenous defence industry.

They have a top-class navy as well.

I like this "Militia" idea, yes, 1 million trained and armed civilians, ready to react is quite a force to be reckoned with, so long as we don't just get nuked uh oh

Then again, Switzerland is still officially a neutral country so i suppose we could remain that way too, how would our friends across the Irish sea react to our militia though, any thoughts?
