Anxiety is a mood. When it becomes a mental disorder, that is, characterized by excessive, uncontrollable and often irrational worry about everyday things that is disproportionate to the actual source of worry, it is diagnosed as generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). GAD occurs without an identifiable triggering stimulus. It is called generalized because the remorseless worries are not focused on any specific threat; they are, in fact, often exaggerated and irrational. It is distinguished from fear, which is an appropriate cognitive and emotional response to a perceived threat and is related to the specific behaviors of fight-or-flight responses, defensive behavior or escape. Anxiety occurs in situations only perceived as uncontrollable or unavoidable, but not realistically so. David Barlow defines anxiety as "a future-oriented mood state in which one is ready or prepared to attempt to cope with upcoming negative events," and that it is a distinction between future and present dangers which divides anxiety and fear.

I think we all get anxious from time to time. Interesting take from Rollo May here on it though. He sees it not necessarily as a bad thing and thinks it can spawn creativity.

i can say i've hit the extreme anxiety in the past, unfounded worry and tension mostly without cause in my case, just as it describes in wikipedia.

pedro27: i would hazard a guess and say alcohol would make anixety worse in some case's not all

Well your guess would be completely wrong. If someone suffers with anxiety then drinking makes it worse. That is a medical fact.

So you're disagreeing with a medical fact?laugh

Well that's that study out the window.roll eyes

Studies show that alcohol may relieve Anxiety while you're drunk but when you sober up it has increased the felling so it is counter productive.

yes i am because there is no survey for, ''each person'' to how they feel after consuming alcohol so medical fact is 'not' 100% percent 'fact' see?

alcohol is classified as a 'downer' or 'depressant' type of drug.
