mr1983: All they have to do is scrap the public bus system. Tender the different routes out to private operators, include subsidies for unprofitable routes while bundling these in with some of the most profitable routes and let competition rule. The time has come to stop socialists from holding people to ransom!!

problem there is private operators wont run a service if it isn't profitable...bus eireann run the service even if it isn't profitable and i'd imagine dublin bus are the very same..I remember being being the only person on a bus for the final 10 miles of the journey..the driver wasn't impressed but thats what public transport is all about providing the service even if there is only 1 person on the bus and to make matters worse you have private bus companies cherry picking the most profitable routes and undercutting bus eireann fares resulting in less people using the public service thats leaking money at an alarming rate anyway...they should ban private companies cherry picking routes that have are the most profitable because they are destroying bus eireannireland

my attitude is if you live in a rural area don't expect decent bus services unless people in that area are willing to pay local taxes.

That attitude would see the Cities fill up mighty quickly and the services in the city would be stretched to breaking point.

the nearest u get a train to donegal is sligo.. bus eireann goes into letterkenny..sadly for anyone going up to somewhere like gweedore (somewhere i go a fair bit thesedays) u must make ur own way (or use one those private bus firms)

oap get a free pass for public services...which in dublin and main routes is great..but someone living somewhere remote..lets face it, u need car..

yeah we pay a lot for property and the likes in dublin..but with that comes the convenience of public transport...the balance of urban v rural living right there..

ive been on bus services in the uk where they do long drawn out routes..and no matter where u get on its a quid and they use far smaller buses..the old imps would be far better used for tiny routes..(theres a route near me which holds about 5 people...and they use a double decker for it)..the admin in dublin bus know how to waste money to gain subsidies..like every other dept in this godforsaken banana republic but as usual its the frontline staff that get the insults and their hours and wage packet examined.

as i said previously people in rural areas could pay local taxes to pay for unviable bus services. I personally believe that no company should receive any taxpayer funding.

And as I said earlier, if you start taxing people for basically not living in a city then the cities would soon find themselves at bursting point costing us far more than services in rural areas do at the moment.

It looks like the proposed cuts will be reversed in 19 to 24 months time if the workers agree to the changes by ballot next week.
