Merriweather: Brilliant then Lilee.. because this will weed the chaff from the hay...

and maybe teachers who are tired or not interested... those who have not performed well... might get a chance to either improve... or be shown the door...

Merri,

yes you did well and what you have said rings true. You have to select the best high school you can. If its not public then you have to go private. But what you did, paid off. good on you.

in which case... the public education system might be viewed differently..

however Lilee... I think there are other factors that could contribute..

For me... in what I see on a daily basis... its not so much education... its the pre education that needs a help...

I mean... if within a family... there is apathy in and around how to live, clean, eat, cook. and those simple basics.. or not even apathy... just generally not knowing how to..

eg... I once grew more pumpkins than I could give away.. and I asked the financial counsellor at work.. would she like some for her clients..

and she looked at me and said... No.. they don't know what to do with a pumpkin.. they would not know how to cook it..

same with last week.. and I have to be very careful how I word this...

Someone.. who works in ER ( emergency relief) giving out food, found a lot of the food tins thrown away down the street.

because people do not know what to do with foodstuff that need more than opening a can and eating it...

so I think, there should be a whack of money thrown at families who clearly need help.. to learn how to... and those families then, may take a bit of interest if they are shown, and guided, and then in turn , the children of those said families.. may get a better grounding, and in turn maybe.. feel a bit better about things.. and maybe, even want to learn at school..

and I am generalising of course... but do you get my drift??

I agree if parents feel their child has the ability to become anything they desire but are disadvantaged by the public education system, they need to make that investment and pay for it.

and i'd disagree my parents tried, however there are obstiguils like high schools that wont accept people like me.
Doesn't mean others know more, quite to the contery, they only better at articulating themselves on paper. I took the australian family court on and the new zealand defence fore repersenting self in the highest courts in both countries, legal repersentaion according to the rules and regulation according to law, right up to high court in both countries.

Biggest problem i have is finding words that express what what i want to explain, is hard for example when i try to explain buddhism, whole philnomin, beginingless, interdependents arising. I can't find lots of wrods in decenary, or even the wordweb spell program i use, can take half an hour to find a word that i'd like to use, so often resharp what i trying to say another way round. Lately i have been googling and google will usually suggest correct spelling search string

The ability to express yourself and relay that information is part of the package, not unless you can play football than you only need passes in all other subjects.

how dare you call the Prime Minister a slimey barstud
LiLee: I usually try to stay away from political debates as I believe everyone is entitled to their own opinions but this issue has me gobsmaked

The Gonski review which led to the Federal Govt. signing of an agreement with NSW, VIC, TAS, ACT and SA to a fairer model of funding for schools which was to be based on the individual needs of the students (that's a very simplified explanation). The remaining states QLD, WA and NT had yet to sign.

This new funding model would have seen an increase of funding to public education which is struggling under the current arrangements.

Tony Abbott stated before the election he would honor the signed agreements for the next four years.

Now the slimey barstud has reneged on his promise and says he never promised what everyone thought he promised??????

As I see it there are two issues here that are so very wrong.

1. An agreement has been signed and it should be a binding contract that no government should be able to reverse.

2. Governments should be made to honour the promises they make when they get voted into power.

This kind of deception is outrageous and has left many people very disappointed and disillusioned.

And the worse thing about it is it's the kids that would have benefited from this extra funding from the federal government.

These people have no honour.
how dare you call the Prime Minister a slimey barstud,,ha , he would probably laugh at that,- bar stud...anyway I have reported your slanderous post and we all hope it will be deleted soon, after a laugh...

Yes... good link

but again.. I like the last paragraph

"Ms Christie said support and encouragement provided by family and friends to HSC students also needed to be acknowledged "because this too would have been an important influence on the final results".

So I am staying with... great news.applause . but without involving the whole family unit... and education for the whole family unit.. it may not be worth all that money... (referring to my earlier post)

but then ... if that funding was also for educating the family unit.. I don't know ... I will have to research.. but I don't think how its all going to be broken down has yet been agreed..

for a starters... not all the states have even agreed on it yet.. and because the federal $1 = state govt. $2

the states have to cough up... grin

rolling on the floor laughing I welcome his attention to this thread, he might even learn a thing or two about what the people of this country care about.

Shame his only recourse would be to delete those who dare to exercise their right to democracy and freedom of speech.

But then again, I would expect no less from our current Prime Minister. He does not deal with opposing views well.

Yes Merri, this also reinforces the fact that no matter what educational institution a family chooses to educate their child, the old saying stands:

" It takes a village to educate a child."

The family must be on board as well as the school.

This fact is evident in both systems.

AgentAjax: Most inventers were high school dropouts, actually many successful people dropped out of school early. What is success anyway, quantifying numbers to a finite digit or living your dream? Education is a system by which it judges but its not practical, so you can be as intelligent as you like but if you cannot display that intellect in physical form then you are doomed to a desk of thinkers and not achievers.

i agee, my youngest attended melbourne university first school for clowns and has a degree as fully educated clown, which he is ok with and thats ok, but when i listen to stuff merri is saying she works in i feel sorry for those been faced with those sort of views

Well, that is correct... sort of..

People who own fishing charter boats... primary producers in fruit, veges, and fishing, some were not able to speak this language, never mind write and read...

They somehow accessed the blueprint of their genes, and made a success by hard work and inner knowhow..

But, re the Gonski report.. the states which signed up for it.. jumped in fairly early... then those that didn't realised that they should.. so complained ...

Then Abbott saw an opportunity to ditch this, and then he realised that he shouldn't ditch this.. and on and on...

But yes... you don't have to have certs to be inventive, creative and have an inquiring mind..

you do need to go to school tho... or be home schooled... that is a basic requirement for this country..

However, AA... those inventors are few... and I still believe that everyone should have measure of education... but I think it is $$ wasted until the education extends this plan to home and parents... I think it should be a package...
