tomcatwarne: Never been to the dogs, horses more my line, but I don't have one. My friend has one, she has two jobs to keep and house it.
well walking the greyhound is the best training for them, and im walking every day on average 12km....so i will buy a greyhound pup and we will both get fit, like killing two birds with one stone. its a great hobby

pedro27: i know some people are cruel i won't be cruel to mine, its not in me....i will keep mine and breed of it, and sell the pups thats the plan.
It's a big responsibility ensuring the pups go to a good home, too.
You're right, Greyhounds are a lovely dog to walk, but might need a wee nap in the middle of a 12km stretch.
Not that I'm taking the opportunity of using this platform to publicly advertise, but there are lots of ex-racing Greyhounds who need adopting into family homes.
They make an excellent pet, don't need all that much exercise (they run round like lunatic for short periods and then spend a lot of time being very, very lazy), they have a lovely, gentle nature and no amount of comfort, or luxury is too much for them.

Hey Ms. Jac
I'm with you! There are SOOOO many retired racers that need a good home as they're dumped by racer owners after they're run out!
I thought about getting a couple(rescues) a decade or so ago but was concerned, thinking they were a very hyper dog. Much to my amazement(& education), I found they are very docile! Of course given the proper amount of required exercise everyday! I went to the pet store that features rescues from the local humane societies on weekends & there were Greyhounds laying around aloof as all get out with small children running around & yelling(exuberantly) all about them. They couldn't seem to care less!
I, at the time opted for a rescue Great Dane, another fabulous personality dog. Or as I call them Grand Noble Old Souls!!!!
But, when I'm ready again for more 4 legged kids I think I will go with the Greyhounds!!!!

y fav. breed are the husky, probably familiar to you pulling sleds, tyhay are a very powerful dog, yet faithful and gentle towards humans.
They are tireless and will work themselves to death for a handful of fish and a kind word. Unfortunately I cannot have one because I travel a lot, so I have to borrow my friends when I am in the cold lands. And we head into the forests for a few days at a time and have a great old time.

I really like big dogs. My last one was a very greyhoundy lurcher. They give off lots of power and energy when you're walking them, but are essentially as lazy as hell. They're okay missing a walk if you're too unwell to take them out, or in another emergency.
The next time I have a furry companion I think I'm going to have to take their lifespan and my age into consideration though, in case I have to lift, or carry them when they're sick, or injured. It wouldn't be the first time.
I think I might be looking out for a smaller, more whippetty lurcher from the pound when the time is right. Now I've had one long-nosed dog I think I'd find another hard to resist.
CuddlingSoul: Never been to dog races, but a lot of horse races. Grandmother lived right across the street from Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky.
its very exciting watching your own dog race and win.

pedro27: there is one greyhound that won over a million in prize money from winning races here in ireland, there is possible big money to be made... it is time consuming looking after one but im set up for it... ive been looking at good bred pups on the net, im willing to pay at least 800euro for one, i might even get two see how the finaces are when i get around to it
A pair of dogs is good so they've got company when you go out.

pedro27: i want the hounds as happy as possible so two for company is key.
sorry to hear about your dog, could you get him a new friend?
At the time my daughter was 6 months pregnant when she lost her little dog, so it just wasn't the right time to get another.
Since then, I've lost my lurcher, so for the first time in 25 years I have no furry friends.
Again, it's just not the right time to adopt another dog given my current commitments. I think it's going to be at least another three years before I can and maybe not even then, depending upon how life pans out.
pedro27: i had one ten year ago, im getting a greyhound pup, going to train the heart and soul out of it, have you ever been to the races?
Great breed. Saved me life once a greyhound did. Same dog won everything around him and the same blood line set a track record here that held for 2 decades.
I love watching them race, used to go to the Swindon track every Wednesday and Friday evenings, I remember a famous dog, he was so strange, walked out of the traps, and strolled behind the pack until second from last corner and they he turned on the turbo boost and overtook the lot, won race after race all over the UK and Ireland. My ex boss had two of his puppies and has been successfully racing them or their offspring for years.
Lovely animals and as been said, when retired they make wonderful companions for humans.
