jono7: i think of it similar to a pub or coffee shop...you run into friends, and although there is a topic or focus to the conversation, many sidebar conversations come up. it's a natural flow to several folks getting together.

as OP, one has the choice to guide folks back to the topic or ignore posts they do not wish to respond to.

sometimes it's those sidebar conversations that draw folks to the thread and make it more interesting.

and sometimes..

it's just folks making a connection with each other which is the purpose of the site.
thumbs up very well said you guys and gals in canada are great cant wait to visit there in october this yearapplause im sooo looking forward to it!!!cheers

In addition to other reasons people have given, many of the posters have been here for a long time and have formed friendships with other posters.

One friend might joke about another friend's post. It's not really going off topic less it continue for more then one page, IMO.

And most of the time when people realize they have hijacked a thread, they will apologize with this hijack

NAKEDMUDPEOPLE: It also depends on what category the thread is posted under.
This thread is posted under Chat, so we will chat.
if this emoticon was not needed we would not have it!

I never look to what category a thread is in.

There you go OP, that comment is off topic but in response to a post.

Just like in real life conversations evolve.

One thought leads to another and if there is a logical progression from the original thread to another related subject it may seem off-topic to some but not to others.

Kendall42: This was something I noticed. People have a tendency to go off topic in any given thread.

It would either be with a personal back and forth( thought the emails were for that), or something that has nothing to do with the actual thread.

So now I'm curious , why do people do that?

(And yes I figure someone thinks they are going to be cute smart funny what ever you want to call it and post something either not answering the question or engage in personal back and forths. not cute)

Yes, we do go off topic... and always have... it is just what it is.... wine

I think you will find that it often happens in verbal conversations too. Its natural and I, personally, find it interesting. I realise it can be annoying when one has the topic involved firmly in their mind but providing it comes back on topic (via this medium, that is, as its what we are specifically discussing)... fine.

If it becomes completely disjointed its, therefore, irrelevant and needs to be brought back, yes.

The personal back-and-forths are okay, in my view, on the basis that its brief (i.e. one or two posts perhaps) but beyond that, it really needs to progress to e-mailing.

Everyone will have a different perspective, I just feel it needs to remain proportionate?

Good thread! bouquet
