Kendall42: This was something I noticed. People have a tendency to go off topic in any given thread.

It would either be with a personal back and forth( thought the emails were for that), or something that has nothing to do with the actual thread.

So now I'm curious , why do people do that?

(And yes I figure someone thinks they are going to be cute smart funny what ever you want to call it and post something either not answering the question or engage in personal back and forths. not cute)

Human Nature, even within a debate, people don't always stick to the topic, Banter comes in, if in to lighten the topic :)

If the OP keeps on topic and reminds the posters they are off topic, then the thread can run on topic, most of the time.

disrespect for the OP or topic?
Show their brilliance..?
Cence, cense, sence, cents, Cence, cense, sence, cents, sense of humor? //aside nerd anyone notice this is the most mis-spelt word on CS?

However my personal input is that - OP should be present to monitor and direct the posts to topic at all times, if possible (sometimes, we cannot.. work or time differences apply here), but visit as often as possible to control threads & posts....thumbs up cheers
