Merriweather: I have a collection of postcards...

It is not terribly exciting, but I like it...

These things date from 1900 and mostly war cards and cities from 1900 to 1950.

What fascinates me is that Tanzania is Tanganika, and so forth.. as lots of countries have had name changes..

so to go with this... I bought maps of the war, and thru postcards, I can track what happened...

I know... boring as anything... that's me..

My dad collects postmarks. I remember him excitedly showing me a love letter sealed with wax with a local frank. What a precious insight into someone's world from long ago. Just plain beautiful.

goldengloss: I collect beautiful Buttons. Old, New, Designer, I buy them in Oxfam, sometimes I have to buy a very old jacket or top to get them, I cut them off and have them stored in Jars.... They are beautiful to look at.
I also collect old costume jewellry and keep the beads and glitter to make newer pieces.

When I was a child I loved to sort through all the different buttons my mother collected for costumes and every day wear. I was fascinated by all the different shapes and colors. Sometimes`I wonder who it is that collects all the "Lonely Hearts". Some mysteries are long and old, still eluding the most intelligent of minds.

Now I collect musical instruments, though I sometimes have to sell some off to have room to walk through the house. I have a Dulcimer that was a present when I was about 12. I kept some (very few) of the flutes I made and sold at the market in the early 80's.

I've never met a child who isn't totally enthralled by buttons. It's interesting how they tap into something in our psyches.

They can be such a powerful tool for self-expression in so many ways, too. I recently did a workshop where we had to use buttons, shells, or stones to describe our family dynamics at a certain point in our lives. The way one woman handled and touched each button which represented each family member said so much about how she felt about each person.

Mine is the "teardrop" shape. The "Hourglass" shape is more popular it seems.
