Nidifugous: http://www.tradingeconomics.com/turkey/gdp-growth

Turkey's economic growth rate is very erratic looking at the bar chart. Some sectors declined, some are flat and some experienced growth. "The expansion was driven by financial and insurance activities, transportation, construction and mining." The forecasts are not all that fantastic.

While that kind of development is more or less normal in emerging markets, how they fare in the future is everybody's guess. What does Erdogan say about economics? what kinds of policies does he want to institute?

I really am not convinced that the economy is as fantastic as the Turks seem to believe.
No one said their economy is fantastic.Just a comparing with the past Ak party did good job.

lifeisadream: There is a basic line of course that has to be met for people to have their needs covered but how -far beyond that- do “countries” should go?.

Societies are different.

Is one car enough?
Is a 3 room home enough?
Is a covered garage enough?
etc…
Are 37 shampoo brands enough?

Do countries value economic growth the same?

Nidifugous: Turkey has never been a socialist country, although that would be much more easily aligned with Islam than a capitalist economy. So they're in a bit of a pickle there. Either their version of Islam has to become liberal or they'll have to embrace a less extreme version of capitalism than what we have.

How does one measure economic prosperity. It's not just the GDP, but a number of other factors. Stuff like having 37 brands of shampoo tends to sort itself out by itself in virtue of demand. One other measure is construction activity which was one of the drivers of their economy, but that doesn't show the big picture. I do not know whether they're in the process of creating a boom and bust situation like we had, but the proof of the pudding is in the eating, you know.

One thing that will bite them in the butt is their national pride. People get arrested because they "insult" the country; if you say something critical about their leadership, you have to be careful not to be charged, etc. those are signs of a dictatorship in the making (like their youtube ban). People in the big cities protest, but the ones out in the country who don't have internet access won't even know what's going on.

If each of the 37 shanpoo brands have their own warehouse, their brand name (which cost to get one), their own employees, their own fix costs, etc.. there is a waste in it and there is a market battle and the profits are getting smaller and smaller and that is happening for making clothes to making cars……some of those resource could go for services, schooling, health care prevention, etc…

Turkey political system is a transition, the gov has the overall control and it will take time to allot it but it will happen.

For their national pride yes it has a cost but also a benefit. I do rememebre millions of their flag hanging everywhere.

I have been at the Ataurk memorial and it looks (a few years back) very communist, yet there are some interesting parts in it and in the outside. I am not sure if the socialist, communist adjective applies anymore (other than in Cuba) look at China.

Most of my work is with people that have very little and when I get into their home they offer me food and I wish not to have that food because they need it but it would be disrespectful not to take their food. Once after I had finish the food they told me it was a “field rat”,uh oh it was tasty just like rabbit.laugh

Macro and micro economics are important for a country to develop but cultures are different and money-currency-material things in their daily lifes have not the same weight from one culture to another and from one economic stratum to another.

lifeisadream: The income per capita has its faults everywhere, here the car, beer, etc.... sales, are taken into account but those are from American, Japanese and European companies, those profits do not make it to the people in this land and we are talking about big money. Also, most of the Banks here are run with foreign capitals and guess where the profit goes.

On your lovely country:
August 10, 2014 Presidential election in Turkey.

Erdogan
21,000,143
51.79%

Ihsanoglu
15,587,720
38.44%

Demirtas
3,958,048
9.76%

“…..Erdogan, (who)was elected outright by a simple majority of the vote in the first round. If no candidate had received more than 50% of the vote in the first round, a run-off election would have been held on 24 August between the two highest polling candidates. Three candidates ran for election. As a result of the 2007 constitutional referendum, the election is the first presidential election in Turkey to be held nationally rather than by MPs within Party” from wiki

You did elect your president:Welcome to democracy!

eliminate night happened accidents, electric off ( never gone places ) , 10 house apartment used ( 780 votes !! ) virtual places created , virtual apartments addresses and houses created. other parties votes sabotaged, example 500 votes for other party wrote there just "5" . when they noticed , manager explained sorry !!!! mistake !!.. of course they can take 51 or 100 % even this way..if this is democracy and eliminate i dont know how to answer this..respect lady.

What did happen with the 300+ miners case that were killed in the Turkey’s mine owned by Canadians.

Did the mine (s) improve the safety protocol?

For the economics indexes there is an explanation but governments give to numbers a "make up" to fit their agenda.

For the political situation in your country, it is a process that you will have to live. No matter how small a change for the better is, embrace it and get involved.

If i can give an advice, try not to fight the government -the cemetery is full of heroes- get involved as civil society and if it is from an international association, the better. That, I learned until I was an adult and it has worked, not as fast as I would like to but it does.

wave Life, I don't understand your example there about 37 brands. There is no waste. It takes very little time for non-profitable business to go out of business. Investment in marketing or brand management isn't something that small businesses can afford in the first place. What happens with tangible assets like factories is that they're either sold off or they're confiscated or refurbished to house another enterprise. If there is any danger to their manufacturing base, then it's by cheap competition from China or Africa or elsewhere in the middle east.

Turkey is in transition? What do you mean? I know what Erdogan is doing and the man here just told us how it really is. So it sounds like it's not a positive change.

I just read an article yesterday in the Economist about emerging markets and their overall prognosis is the same as what I wrote. Not looking good for them (or anybody else, for that matter).

What I meant with socialism/capitalism and Islam. It's not the same thing as in China. Islam has its own concept of banking, for instance. They're not supposed to charge interest, but yet the money has to come from somewhere to make loans if the demand is greater than the bank's assets and operating costs. There are other precepts in Islam that are incompatible with a capitalist economy.

Honestly, I think Erdogan and his cronies are (pardon my language) effing the whole country.

I also went to see the Ataturk Mausoleum in Ankara. A relative is a scientist in Ankara. I must say that they outdid themselves there with food and buffets. Very very nice spreads and No rats. laugh

Yes, of course, culture and economics aren't always compatible, but unfortunately no country can operate in isolation anymore as the world develops around it, you know. The trick is to have a wise leader, not a corrupt disingenuous despot. Turkey needs another Ataturk!

The point I was trying to make with the 37 shampoo brands is that if every brand had a backup company, their fixed cost would higher than having shared several productos –which in real life it happens that way- but companies, business… are reaching red phases with the global competition (as you have said it) and many times they get out of business just with a matter of cents in one supply for making their product, kind of.

What we are failing to see is to develop new services for society.
Services, that will improve people’s life and that goes beyond having 37 brands of shampoo.

If having "democratic" (please note the "") elections for the first time at the national level in Turkey is not a good change.
Then let them get back to their totalitarian way.
When the egg brakes even a tiny bit, it will brake sooner o later.

Does Turkey have vices, corruption…I bet they do but any small oppening to the world is a window where freedom can fly in.

Is the Turkey’s president the worse person?
So is every president. Ask that to the American gang against Obama.
And wait for the other gang to disqualify the Bushes/Republicans laugh

Is my president the worse?
He is not the best but he does not decide my way of living.

I do not believe that a country destiny is made by one man/woman,
not even Turkey's.

Trough history there has been great men that have changed their countries for the better and Ataturk was one of them (I have read about him and visited his memorial).

On my side, I mostly do not vote anymore yet I belong to an active civic group (I used to be member in two groups but it was just too much).

Leo_7: You know how much Turkeys economy has improved during Ak Party's rule.and how much Turkey became stronger?Of course Erdogan isnt ideal, but he is best since Ataturks times. If you check statistics you will see in what state were Turkey before Ak party came in power.Thats what worries west that Turkey becoming stronger.Who would want a powerful muslim majority state at the gates of Europe. All they want is weak country with puppet leaders which will do whatever west wants.Thats todays world politics. And if theres a leader who stands for his national interests (specially if its a nation of different culture and religion)they declare him an evil.

Hello,
well there is already everything said about that what Erdogan achieve with many facts. So thanks to all the other people who wrote this facts!

Actual Erdogan isn't the prime minister anymore, he is the Federal President so that means he must be neutral. Unfortunately when he talks than he still say "we" regarding AK Party or he starts talks with "in our religion...."!!
So not every Turkish person is AK Party and we have so many different religions in Turkey! Like the mine disaster...the company of this disaster can participate in a public tender and get the energy project because they are from the party.

Last week I wrote a similar comment on the Charlie Hebdo thread and I have the feeling that this match also in this discussion (at some place):

It starts always with "my god...not your god" and than it continue with "OUR god...not your god" and the rest is history.
Nice quote from Winston Churchill about History:
"History is simple one damned thing after another"

I wrote here already about my personal life just to say: it is not a problem a people from different culture, religion, beliefs...etc can live together and become friends. Change your thoughts, change your life!

By the way a quote by Hafiz that I also love:
I Have Learned
So much from God
That I can no longer
Call Myself
A Christian, a Hindu, a Muslim,
A Buddhist, a Jew.

All what they did so far on the paper...or all this statistics, well I don't look at them and just look on the streets.

On paper everything is nice in real life.....the only winner are a couple of people from the party but not the whole nation. Very simple thing...you have an inflation rate below 10% but it is standard that prices of energy or food increase 3 to 4 times in a year and this up to 100%. There are no details needed it is just a simple example!

More and more of their bad work exposing everyday and it is always the same......instead of talking about this they start discussion about religion, patriotism......

The election of him last year but also before that happens with illegal tricks and it is not possible to judge them because now they have their own people in every possible position.
On national TV Erdogan get something like 240 minutes and his opponent only 90 seconds. Or it must be a very very big cat who was able to knock out the transformer of a whole district of Istanbul on election day. This was the comment of the Energy Minister....

I think all the facts are already on the table about this organisation but you will not find them in the newspaper or on CNN but on the streets. As everybody knows is that they already control the media.

Don't mind Leo. He can't help it.

People fail to realise that every country in that part of the world achieved huge credit driven growth during that time. You could have elected a monkey into the Port, and the economy would have done well. The problem now is the huge level of corruption fostered by Erdogan the Magnificent is helping the economy slowdown now to a hault. His infighting with Gulen is causing major problems aswell. Turkey's main problem is, the opposition is splintered. Looking at the Map of the Sultan's electoral result show the rural Inlander Mongol-Turks voted for him, Inshallah! And the modern, civilised Turks in the West and Southern coastal areas voted for the other guy. And lastly, the Kurdish vote goes to the Kurdish representative. So the opposition seems kinda split.

Actually this thread was about the palace but i expected all the negative comments against Erdogan. You guys think you are clever by trying to show that you all love Turkey but sorry that the country run by a "bad man".I understand your onecided approach very well. Its a typical western approach. But dont play that you care about Turkish people.
Of course you westerners would like to see a western puppet man in the head of Turkey so you could do with Turkey whatever you want.Divide it into peaces (kurdish, greek armenian parts)and destroy the most powerful muslim country forever under the name of democracy. But people like Erdogan would never let it happen.Thats why you all despise Erdogan.
