It does vary dramatically between cultures though...the measurable amount of personal space varies significantly.
And also between rural and urban communities.
I guess, the lower the population density, the more space one expects.
As for touching my stuff, I'd go along with most of what OB said.

I know I actually agreed with him too ..... after getting the meaning of mate cleared up lol
I agree completely it varies among cultures, even within the same country. My exes family was always hugging and back slapping even if they didn't know you that well, and I came from more reserved protestant roots. I love that about them now, but at first it was a big adjustment :)
