Went cycling in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales last weekend and my friend kindly let me use his electric cycle. He converted a mountain bike and added a 1kw motor. I was amazed at the power and also the life of the batteries. We covered many miles, some of which were on very steep gradients, but the bike just kept on going without me ever having to give it full power. Still prefer my old mountain bike but for a fun and easy ride in the hills, this was hard to beat.

Some of my sisters use them on a regular basis. I use them as well when I'm over for a visit. They are great fun to use and gets you from a to b in no time and with a lot less effort. They use it mostly to beat city traffic and cutting down on commuting time without appearing at work looking like someone who just stepped out of a sauna. Cheap they are not and there is a massive difference in quality. just one of many,

Hiya Bode. They're a great thing to get around in although I haven't tried one myself. Surprising, considering my son builds homemade bikes and scooters as a hobby. Beautiful scenery there in that photo....awesome.

Great views , I love to get out on my own trusty steed , she's motorless hence my experience of electric bikes is zilch although I see a few people about who've got one . Mostly elderly .
Here's my long threatened destination , about 35 miles from me I've got the Witter towbar and cycle carrier I just gotta get the weather in which to do it Starting in Westport with the bike and on to Achill and back for a day out .
COOL! However, I bicycle for the exercise! Technology must learn to understand that living organisms must move and expend energy to stay vital! PS - same view can be had the old-fashioned way!

A common misconception about the electric bikes is that one does not need to cycle, does not move etc. It is still a bicycle, if you don't put effort into it you're going nowhere and yes you still can work up a sweat with these. Difference is on the flat you will be faster and in hilly terrain it feels more like being on the flat, but cycling you still do. It is not a scooter.

Thank you for the clarification....and lord knows, at my age the "assist" would be appreciated,....HOWEVER....on the flat.....really....FASTER? Are you insulting my muscular strength? LOL! And when I am in the "hills" I do not WANT it to feel flat,....I seek the burn...
Yeah,....I see what its all about.....a tiny electro-boost when the old legs get tired....

Kaybee50: I've never tried one Bode, but that view is spectacular!
Yes the Yorkshire Dales are beautiful. We cycled up from Dentdale which you can see in the distance, then on to the village of Ingleton and then to Settle where we caught a train back to the campsite. The line from Settle to Dent is well known Settle to Carlisle steam engine route. Unfortunately we weren't able to catch a steam train, but the journey back to Dent on the regular train service was wonderful. Dent station is in fact the highest mainline station in England, great downhill ride on the bikes back to the campsite in Dent.

The one I used was a conversion costing less than £200. The batteries are reclaimed from computer batteries giving a range of around 60 miles. Being a 1kw motor, the hill climbing capabilities are amazing, I was surprised how it kept going, mile after mile despite the steep gragients, although I was pedalling to assist.

All the parts are available online, quite easy to convert a regular cycle.

Sounds good, I've driven that route, Achill Island is really beautiful..
