(CNN)The Pentagon is demanding that China return an "unlawfully seized" underwater drone after a Chinese warship took the device from waters near a US oceanographic vessel.
"We call upon China to return our UUV immediately, and to comply with all of its obligations under international law," Pentagon press secretary Peter Cook said in a statement, using the abbreviation for "unmanned underwater vehicle."

I don't know if it's a question of unstability or simply nonchalant attitude because it's not his problem anymore.
But yes it can be a set up against Trump's leadership. A big effort to undermine his transition to the white house.

In an Unpresedented (sic) (Spelling error was fixed when the adults took over Trumps phone) turn of events, it is speculated that Chinas actions were in response to Trumps phone call to Taiwanese President, and have been in touch with the US State Dept to return it.
They stated it was an unidentified object, and when recognised for what it was, immediately got in touch with the US to return it. They have stated that Trumps bumbling has not helped , shock horror
What happens if they don't return it, the US will send another one I suppose.

Well it looks like it's a very deserving response to a Presidential elect''s insults, but I would go beyond that. I think it's an invitation for a more military show off. China us definitely overdoing it.
