I've lived in Alaska since 1989 full time ; and was stationed here ,in the army ,for 3 years , in the 70s . Lately a lot of these reality shows about Alaska , have become popular . These shows are garbage . Please don't believe the way they portray life in Alaska ...... Alaska : Gold Rush started a mini "gold rush" up here , when it started . A lot of people moved up here , thinking they were going to get rich . 98% went home broke .... I live 70 miles from the Kilchers ( Alaska : The Last Frontier ) and drive by their homestead regularly , because I have land 12 miles farther up Kachemak Bay ; than their homestead . The show gives you the idea that they live remote and have to live the way they live .... BS.... Their driveway turns off East End Road ; which is a paved road They have electricty , and go to town regularly . They only live 11 miles from Homer , a beautiful little coastal town with every amenity you could want because one of it's main industries is the tourist industry . Cruise ships dock in Homer . It's other industry is fishing ; great halibut and salmon fishing ..... There's a saying up here , concerning Homer .... " Homer is a quaint little drinking town with a fishing problem ". LOL . Some stuffed shirt types have raised hell about that , LOL..... Anyone interested in what life is really like ; or , if you've harbored a secret desire to live here ; feel free to contact me , either on this forum or write me through my profile ; I'll try to answer your questions . If I can't , I'll see if I can find out .... MM

There's an old saying , that goes ." It's better to remain silent , and have people think you're a fool ; than to open your mouth and leave little doubt ."

..... The big problem is , that they go by a script written by people without a clue as to how life really is in Alaska . And people living in the lower 48 don't realize that . All those shows have so many mistakes , that a person who has lived here wouldn't make . Mistakes like they make on these shows would get you killed .....At the very least they'd make you look stupid .... In one episode of "Alaska : The Last Frontier " ; Atz Lee and his wife Jane are fishing for red salmon in a little stream ; with no luck . He makes the statement ," well I guess they aren't biting , so we may as well go home ." .. Anyone living in Alaska more than one summer , knows salmon ( and especially reds) don't "bite" once they enter fresh water . Kings , silvers and pinks will strike at lures ,but not because they're feeding . It's to protect their nesting area from trout and dolly varden , that feed on their eggs . With red salmon , you're snagging them . And you have to snag them in or very close to their mouths ; If you hook them anywhere else you have to let them go ...So for him to say , "they're not biting , is ridiculous ....

Thank you for posting this!
Where to start...I've been to Alaska many years ago, only to Anchorage. Myself and a friend drove all the way through Canada on a road I think was called Hell's Gate (or Devil's Gate??) Ok, this was over 30 years ago.
I was very impressed with the Northern Lights! Just recently posted a video of Alaska on my FB account; such beautiful wilderness; I love it love It shows the Northern Lights, a star lit heaven and shooting stars :)

I live in the socalled "concrete jungle..." sigh Surrounded by people, buildings and roads frustrated

I'm interested in what life is like in Alaska and must admit I have a "secret" desire to live in Alaska, but I live in Europe...

Smiles across the miles,
MeVeggie

Alaska is a very beautiful place to live . A lot of wildnerness and not a lot of people . Most people think it's old and dark all the time . The climate is just like any plae ; one you get acclimatized , it's not as bad as people think . Summers are in the 70s where I live . It would surprise people to know that it gets up to 100 in some areas , in summer And during summer , it stays daylight about 20 hours a day . People are surprised at how good gardens do here .... In the wintere it does get old and dark . I've seen it hit -30 degrees for a couple of weeks at a time ; but normally it's around "0" to +10 degrees in winter . We get a good bit of snow ; but people here don't slow down , just because it snows . They trade their boats , 4 wheelers and horses for skis snowshoes and snowmobiles . And it's just as beautiful in winter , as in summer . Atually winter is better because you can ramble around out in the woods without worrying about bears . .... Sine you live in Europe , I'm not sure how you ould do more than visit here . Unless you found an american itizen and got married ; and from what I understand that's not easy ...

If I knew much about Alaska, I wouldn't have to ask you and since you offer to tell about it, I asked.
I could also search the internet to get my answers, but there's a lot of nonsense on the net and you're a local (hope that's the right word) that knows best.
Also isn't it the same the other way around: how much do you really know about any country in Europe..?
Many Americans think we walk around wearing wooden shoes here...Or they think Kopenhagen is the capital of The Netherlands, and so on...
We learn the basic things about a continent, not so much about the different countries/states of that particular continent.
The fishing and hunting is what stuck with me througout the years and I never really knew otherwise and now I do.
Thanks for your answers and it's good to know about the "veggies".

Sounds like I touched a nerve , with my answer . I'm sorry you took offense at what I said . And you say ,"also isn't it the same the other way round : how much do you really know about any country in Europe ." .. Many Americans think we walk around wearing wooden shoes here .... or they think Kopenhagen is the capital of the Netherlands , and so on ." .... Where do you get your information, LOL , or is it just something you came up with yourself; because it's pretty evident that you think americans are stupid ; so , let me set you straight on a few facts . (1) I don't know of "any" americans who think you walk around wearing wooden shoes . And most americans know that Copenhagen is the capital of Denmark ( not the Netherlands ) , and so on . So , to me ; it seems like americans actually know more than you think they do ..

If I had a nickel for every guy who has contacted me wanting to move to Alaska I'd be rich! I absolutely love it here, but most don't and are trapped by their jobs or lack there of.

I understand what you're saying but in reverse . I have been contacted by quite a few women from the lower 48 or other parts of the world . I've hit it off with a few ; even had some come up for a visit . My problem is , in the end , they don't want to live here , and I love Alaska ... Wanted to live here since I was 7 or 8 years old ; finally made it in 1989 , will be buried here ; but most women don't want to live here , either because of the lifestyle we live here ; or , ( the main one ) is they don't want to live so far from their families ; especially their grand children . And I can relate to that . My 6 year old grand daughter is my world .... But it sure would be nice to meet a good woman to share it all with ..... I can see your problem . I bet you're contacted by a lot of guys , you're one of the nicest looking older women on this site , and from your profile you sound like a real nice person . . I thought about contacting you a long time ago ; but doubt you'd be interested in me . I couldn't keep up with you , LOL .More power to you darlin' ; no disrespect intended .
