It´s probably totally dull with crumbling soviet style igloos dotted around and the odd stray dog barking at down and outs that have wet their pants.

As I said to the first person who commented on this thread ; a woman who thought it would be "cute" to say she thought Alaska was a fish .... It's best to say nothing , and have people "think" you're a fool ; than to open your mouth , and leave little doubt ... I never understand why these "supposedly " adults ; get on peoples threads and say things they think are cute or cool . It only shows their stupidity . I started this thread , for people who might actually be interested in what it is really like living in Alaska . So people who watch all these Alaska reality TV show , know the truth . Not the BS thy show on these shows .

Jenny5IA: I thought Alaska was a fish. You live and learn eh?

So funny...Alaska a fish?
Actually this would be a good perfect essay to write about....let's say 23 pages? Double spaced, Times New Roman fonts, letter size no more than 12 pt, and with an attractive title to it, let's say something like "Fishy Alaska"? or "Alaska The Fish"? frustrated

I was stationed in Kodiak Alaska in the early 70s until the USCG took over the island. It was still messed up after a major tsunami hit it in the mid 60s. Regardless it was beautiful country.

Hi Mountain Man -

I was going to quote your first comment about "the old saying" but decided to wait until I read your thread through to the last post.

As for the old saying - I have never heard that before but I'll certainly remember it :)

As for Alaska and all the TV shows currently showing here on National Geographic, some are interesting to follow but it has to be said ones like the Kilcher family does make one think at times as how life can be as they portray it.

Basically, you have clarified quite a few things about "what they do" and it's good that, let's say "suspicions" are laid to rest as far as they go.

We also see the one about "Lakeside Rebels" but to be honest, that show - in my humble opinion - is well and truly over dramatised.

Take Stefen in a recent show, the showed used almost 10 minutes having him talk about the rough weather (3 times!), because his oversized baseball cap blew off.

No offence intended towards Stefan by the way! ;)

I'd rather watch paint dry.

I used to like watching the Brown Family, but that got to be "finger down your throat" kind of thing, but somethings are still okay with that show in small bites. (Is a wolf howl in order here?) It's good to see that they teddybear do love their bears.

As for me, I prefer the Port Protection series as there are a few people there who tell things as they are, (and if not, they are convincing).

Anyway Mountain Man - thanks for a good thread and I hope it grows. I'll bookmark it and drop in from time to time.

Keep it up!

MountainMan: I understand what you're saying but in reverse . I have been contacted by quite a few women from the lower 48 or other parts of the world . I've hit it off with a few ; even had some come up for a visit . My problem is , in the end , they don't want to live here , and I love Alaska ... Wanted to live here since I was 7 or 8 years old ; finally made it in 1989 , will be buried here ; but most women don't want to live here , either because of the lifestyle we live here ; or , ( the main one ) is they don't want to live so far from their families ; especially their grand children . And I can relate to that . My 6 year old grand daughter is my world .... But it sure would be nice to meet a good woman to share it all with ..... I can see your problem . I bet you're contacted by a lot of guys , you're one of the nicest looking older women on this site , and from your profile you sound like a real nice person . . I thought about contacting you a long time ago ; but doubt you'd be interested in me . I couldn't keep up with you , LOL .More power to you darlin' ; no disrespect intended .

I've been to Tennessee, while it is beautiful country, it looks nothing like the pictures I've seen of Alaska?
