A new major hurricane that is heading for already destroyed islands in the Caribbean has been upgraded to a Category three storm. The National Hurricane Centre (NHC) predicts that Hurricane Maria is heading straight for the Leeward Islands - and could get even stronger. It has the power to further ravage islands that were badly hit by Hurricane Irma. It is due to hit the Leewards late on Monday, local time.
Many of the islands in its predicted path, including the British Virgin Islands, St Kitts and Nevis and Anguilla are still recovering after being battered by one of the strongest hurricanes in recorded history. All three countries are on a hurricane warning or watch for Maria, along with Guadeloupe, Dominica and Martinique and the British overseas territory of Montserrat.
St Lucia, Antigua and Irma-ravaged Barbuda are on a warning for winds of tropical storm strength. The latest advisory from the NHC says Maria will be an "extremely dangerous major hurricane" by the time it reaches the British Virgin Islands.

Hurricane Maria has strengthened to an "extremely dangerous" category four hurricane, US forecasters say, as it heads towards the Leeward Islands in the Caribbean.
It is due to hit the islands on Monday night local time. Maria is moving roughly along the same path as Irma, the hurricane that devastated the region this month. A hurricane watch is in place for Puerto Rico, St Martin, St Barts, Saba, St Eustatius and Anguilla.
Hurricane warnings have been issued for Guadeloupe, Dominica, St Kitts and Nevis, Montserrat, Martinique, St Lucia and the US and British Virgin Islands.
Some of these islands are still recovering after being hit by Hurricane Irma - a category five hurricane which left at least 37 people dead and caused billions of dollars' worth of damage
Hurricane Maria has caused widespread damage to the Caribbean island of Dominica, as the latest Atlantic storm barrels into territories still reeling from Irma.
The hurricane has strengthened to an "extremely dangerous" and "potentially catastrophic" category five storm, before making landfall with top winds swirling at 160mph on Monday night.
"We have lost all what money can buy and replace," Dominica's Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit wrote on Facebook, saying there were initial reports of "widespread devastation".
Dangerous storm surges, destructive waves, flash floods and mudslides also threaten the Leeward Islands - the island group that includes Martinique, Puerto Rico and the US and British Virgin islands. Puerto Rico is braced for the possibility of a direct hit late on Tuesday.
The storm is moving along roughly the same path as Hurricane Irma, which devastated several islands and parts of Florida earlier this month.
Here in Puerto Rico, we dodged Irma but I don't think we are going to be as lucky with Maria. This is a bad storm and I'm sorry to say that it will probably tear up this place. I also remember when George went through here and this one is very similar. Prospects do not look good!

Puerto Rican authorities have warned residents to “evacuate or die”, with just hours to go before Hurricane Maria tears through the island with winds up to 175mph.
Maria, the most powerful storm to hit the region in nearly a century, has already barreled through island nations across the Caribbean, leaving widespread devastation in its wake.
The Category 5 storm killed one person and injured two others as it tore through Guadeloupe on Monday evening, officials on the French island confirmed
