When others do it they are also seen as nasty, or witty, or ironic, etc.
Without any vocal inflection, as in "hearing" a tone of voice, sarcasm is a quick way for people to be misunderstood. However, even with having the element of vocal inflection, there is - of course - room for misunderstanding.
Many times, I tend to be a sarcastic person. People either misunderstand me and make whatever judgment, or they "get it" and have a sense of appreciation, because they too, possess a sarcastic streak.
Sarcasm is subjective. People think you are either being a jerk, or they find humor in it. I suppose there is a middle ground tossed into the mix, as well.
You just can't please all the people, all the time.

RedHeadedTaurus: Why not …
I really don't know why not, but I think it is because I don't really like hurting people in real life, as I can feel their hurt....I hope u understand....The way I am here, is not what I'm really like at all....Easier to type something....to someone u don't know....but some like u, u care for, and don't want to hurt.....
It's heroic for somebody with cerebral palsy to describe their condition as "not ideal", but for you to describe their condition as not ideal is the behaviour of an arsehole... To whom's expense is the joke being made? That's the question.

Basically the golden rule is to make fun or light of yourself more than anybody else. Being the butt of your own joke gives confidence to the idea that you can take a joke. The worst is somebody who makes lots of jokes about other people, but if you make a joke about them they'll take it to an industrial tribunal.
