Most people are just a few steps away from homelessness. Lose your job; become ill and unable to work and thus unable to keep up home repayments, etc.
During the recession here, the local charity which provides meals for the homeless and destitute found that some of the people who had been contributing to the charity in the past were now turning up there for their daily meal. Nobody knows what the future will bring. What circumstances will change. Lack of a robust housing or mental health policy sees more people on the street.
Of course there are some organised beggars. That is a problem everywhere. But there are organised white collar thieves too, and these contribute to the homelessness and begging even more.
Nobody chooses to be living on the streets rather than in a safe warm bed they can call their own.

i don't give to buskers, there are organisations that help them , but i do give to buskers, some of them are quite talented and they are not begging but offering entertainment, there are a couple of younger people i listen to sometimes, and give them some change in return for their entertainment,

I am inclined to do the same! The buskers have no hidden agenda. Begging can be big business. However, we all have to be conscious of those experiencing mental health issues. They are someone’s precious son or daughter and they are in trouble! Tough one!!------ This thread is Archived ------

So anyways, I asked him what he wanted to eat and I bought him some water, snacks, and a treat and brought it back to him.
By the grace of god and science I’m lucky not to be the one begging.
When you have an opportunity, buy the homeless food, there’s nothing more rewarding than helping someone who cannot help u back...
