Labour MPs reveal they are ready to rescue Theresa May's Brexit deal in Commons vote

Multiple Labour MPs have told The Independent they are prepared to support the Brexit agreement Theresa May hopes to bring back from Brussels, boosting the prime minister’s chances of forcing it through parliament.

The MPs include the first to state publicly that they will struggle to vote against a deal secured in Brussels if the alternative is a no-deal Brexit – even if, as expected, Jeremy Corbyn orders his party to oppose it.

They say that crashing out of the EU would be a disaster for their constituents, while also fearing a backlash from voters accusing them of blocking Brexit.

It comes as Ms May appears resigned to having to rely on Labour votes to secure parliament’s support for her deal in the face of staunch opposition from many of her own Eurosceptic backbenchers.

Labour MPs told The Independent that at least 15 could rebel against Mr Corbyn and back the government, which could be enough to tip the balance in the Commons in favour of the deal.

One prepared to go public, Gareth Snell, MP for Stoke Central, said: “If the deal is some sort of customs union, protection of the unity of the union and looking at a future trade deal, it would be very hard to justify why we’re not supporting that.”

Ruth Smeeth, Stoke North MP, said: “If the option is voting for the deal or voting for something that would mean no deal – well, I’m not prepared to vote for no-deal.”

Don Valley MP Caroline Flint said: “I believe if there is a reasonable deal that stops us crashing out with no deal, we shouldn’t rule it out.”

Speaking to Sky News' Sophy Ridge on Sunday, Ms Flint added: "The problem is, we are now - those of us who want to get a deal - are sometimes stuck between a rock and a hard place between hardline Brexiteers who think we can waltz off without a deal and some hardline Remainers who, for their own reasons don't want a deal because they want to overturn the referendum results."

Asked about speculation around 30 Labour MPs would be prepared to vote for a deal if it meant defying the whip, she said: "I'm really not sure, but I think if a reasonable deal is on the table the question for some of my Labour colleagues is 'why wouldn't you support a deal, why would you stand along (with) Boris Johnson or Jacob Rees-Mogg who want us to crash out without a deal?"

Good luck United Kingdom.
I hope to visit this beautyfull country many more times.
The Brexit is an act of wisdom, Europe is riding through a dead end street, and they know they do, but they keep telling the people that's it's a wonderful lane with lots of flowers, nice trees and forrests, while all we see is garbage along the road.
They are lying, so it's good to leave.

But I've had many good holidays in the UK, they say it's always raining overthere, well, not during my holidays.
And the landscapes are beautyful.
Last time I was there, 2014, I was cycling for the dutch hedgehog foundation, but my bike wasn't very good in the English hills. And twice I had to sleep in the open, while it was very cold (it was June). So I cycled on the first night, I was near Salisbury, and not even a hotel with a room of 90 pound had a room for me, of course money was not the problem.
So next morning when the sun came up and it became warm I decided to sleep in the berm on Salisbury hill. But I got no chance to sleep, every minute a car stopped to ask if I had an accident and if I was hurt. Lol.

So many good memories on the UK people, keep the faith, everything will work out just fine. And maybe over 5 years you're doing even better than in the time you were in the EU. I hope the Netherlands will follow your country then.

You guys have guts.

some good beers also of course, though when you're used to dutch beer, it ain't the best.
But people are willing to help you everywhere, In my country most people ignore each other.
I don't even know my neighbours, wouldn't recognise them when I saw them in the supermarket.
On the other side, I have new neighbours all the time, some are living in those appartments for only four months.

I've been in the south, several times in London, on the bike from harwich to Okehampton (about 20 km past Exceter), in the middle (Birmingham, Warwick, and in Schotland twice.

Due to the fact that I have no driverslicence I'm usually forced to use public transport so I miss the most beautyfull spots. That was also a reason to go by bike.

Would love to travel around the whole UK and Ireland with someone who can spend two months with me, looking for good places and a good glass of beer in the afternoon/evening.
Of course you need a driver's licence and a car, and you need to know when stop your drinking, so we can travel on next day.

Just as I didn't see everything in the Netherlands yet (and it's a small country), I bet you UK'ers didn't see everything of your beautyful country yet.
