As a roller skater as I recalled as a kid in 1970s to 1980s. I have done more research about skating back before I started, children, teens, and yes, even adults. True whole family would go out and roller skate. Skating was not like many of you know. Rinks used to have organ music and they would have roller skating especially couple skating, figure skating, and ballroom skating.

Americans were thinner back then by burning up to 600 calories per hour skating. No video games, no cell phones... if you want to meet a guy or a girl back then, the rinks had them there.

Many thought it was rock and roll played at the rinks. Not true. it was organ music.

Many even wore suits and dresses to skate. It was the requirements at rinks under then Roller Skating Rink Owners Association. Another organization has taken over and its different.

Today, over 7000 Rinks closed. Its all videos now and cell phones. Messy rooms and home. Dishes in the sink for days.. Seen them all. It is sad.

If any others did not skate, they would cruise their boulevards in their towns and go to drive-ins to hang out with their 35 Fords, 57 Bel Aires, and more. The Drive-ins perhaps were the ones you can really listen to music tune of Rock-n-Roll or Do-wop.

Well, I am gonna go listen to some good ol' Rock-n-Roll! (humming to the 50s music...)

I doubt you are speaking from experience of roller skating in the 50's. According to your profile you are 54 years old. That would make you born in 1965.

Your second sentence "I have done more research about skating back before I started, children, teens, and yes, even adults" is very confusing. confused

Am I missing some fact that you accidentally left out?

1950s America is way too repressive for my tastes.

We had rock and roll at my skating rink.. They played the mandatory organ music too, but we rocked.. Disco too unfortunately, tho some of it was worthy...

All night skates were the best.. I met my future first wife at one... This was in the seventies, so I may be a bit off topic... beer

secretagent09: Let me see how good my math is.
You were born around 1983.
Thirty some years after the 50's.
You weren't even a glimmer in your parents eyes in the 50's.
And yet you think you know what the 50's decade was like because you read it in a book?
I was born in '47 in USA, and Chesney's comments mostly square with what I observed. If you want an in-depth critique by a responsible adult of the time, read Philip Wylie's _A Generation of Vipers_.

I was born in 1942. I am very aware of what the 50's were like. I lived it and I loved it.
