The Greek philosopher Plato wrote that humans once had four arms, four legs and two faces. He explained that Zeus split us in half as a punishment for our pride, and we were destined to walk the Earth searching for our other half.
Our understanding of love and relationships might have evolved since 385 BCE, when Plato penned Symposium, but the idea of having an ‘other half’ still endures for many, and has lasted across numerous cultures throughout history. Some Hindu traditions hold the idea that people have a karmic connection with certain souls; in Yiddish, there is a term for an ideal or predestined marriage partner – your ‘bashert’ – which loosely translates to destiny. Thirteenth-century Persian poet and Islamic scholar Rumi posed the idea that lovers do not finally meet, but that they are somehow in each other all along. And from Romeo and Juliet to Heathcliff and Cathy, Western literature is replete with examples of lovers who were meant to be together.
Does it make sense, I firmly believe in soulmates.
I'm sure many people on CS have had this feeling that they have known their soulmates, maybe in another life. Are you one of the chosen who recognises this sort of love, or what do you put it down to?

Twice in my life we found each other but both of us were already taken. Being myself I couldn't allow families to be left without fathers. So here I am again looking. Will not go for less then a soulmate. Not much time left for an experimentation. Will recognize him at once. Karma Good question Tom

Thanks for your excellent reply, I find I have empathy which works as a sort of radar and I seem to sense what people are feeling about me, it sometimes works against me by alerting another persons empathy sometimes with explosive results. But I have had a similar feeling to yours twice, once we were both convinced we must have been related in another place or time, we were so very empathic to each other.

I suppose for any given person there are others out there, somewhere, who would make ideally compatible partners. I'm sure it must be wonderful if you are lucky enough to come across one of them, and I do believe that luck is the factor involved, rather than "fate". As for the qualities that that rare individual possesses that makes them worthy of being your soulmate, well that, I think, is just the law of probability at work. There is bound to be someone, somewhere, who has just the right ingredients to be your perfect match. I don't see the need to call on philosophers to make the matter seem more mysterious than it deserves, and neither do I think we should blame Zeus for making the search to find our soulmate necessary. It's just our human nature at work, and our tendency to idealise things.
Sorry for not being able to bring myself to put a more romantic spin on it.
Sort of. I don't think the universe owes me a lover, I don't live like finding my soulmate is going to happen to me, and yet i know that the one I love most will not be perfect. They'll not be what I thought, wanted and planned for. I do believe that love finds you when you're not looking for it and when that person is not even necessarily what you're looking for. So much of ourself and the other are a mystery, love cannot succeed with plan.

Christ, Chesney, you have more romance in you than most.
If love comes when you are not looking, I should be due a visit. I feel a song coming on, a good old oldie" When love comes in and takes you for a spin, "
I believe in soulmates. Don't believe in just one person for everyone. I do believe my fella is a soul mate, unless there's still more life changing growing we still need to go through that sends us off in different directions but I don't think so.
Well I hope so...
You definately need to be really real with yourself before looking for anyone or else it will all end in tears. Be in love with you first ( healthy amount lol) Then go looking...I'd tell my neices this but I wouldn't have listened at their age either...

Yeh, maybe God does play dice.
But it's nice to put such things in a nice package, like a Christmas present, or a lady in a nice dress.
No I'll stick to my soulmates, I may be wrong but I'm happy

What do we really mean by "soulmate"? Somebody who always sees things the way we do? Therefore someone who is always wrong when we are wrong. Or do me mean someone who perfectly understands us, but sticks by us despite that? It could mean any number of things.
Soulmate isn't always someone we fall in love with... We do encounter many people who come into our lives for a reason, they all are soulmates, as they help us elevate in some way... if we are willing ... Some make us repeat the same mistakes...until we finally get it... They are lesson we need to learn... Some hurt us to make us teach ourselves love... Some are to show us where we go wrong... Some come to stay...one way or another... Soulmate isn't the love of your life... They are a stepping stone towards we falling in love with who we are...

As I said before if I wasn't spoken for I would marry you

pedro27: Don't chase money, love or success
become the best version of yourself and those things will chase you...!!
I have already become the best version I can manage, pedro, and I am beginning to suspect my three pursuers have met with an accident during their rush to get to me.
