Northern Ireland census: Another psychological blow for unionism

Results will fire up those pushing for a united Ireland poll and dishearten an already insecure unionist population

pedro27: Thank you

Most British people would ''understand'' and vote to give it back IMO
Most British apart from the ones in Northern Ireland. But just so you know a united Ireland is not the same thing as an independent Ireland. It would just be bringing the north of Ireland into a European government elected by no one and accountable to no one.

A European government whose best chance of keeping the lights on this winter comes from Britain and Norway who just happen to not be a member. Things are getting a bit real now in this century and im not sure the EU will do you any favours when it comes to tough times, it's the cutting edge of silliness and decadence earning a living by drinking margarita through a curly plastic straw. All of which is very old thinking.

Tiger_Moth: Then you know nothing about what has taken place. Northern Ireland if put to the vote would stay with the U.K. and yes it is about money as the financial support the U.K supplies would be cut off.

What you personally want and what others have ,are two different issues.
Personally I am a Protestant . I posted on my census that I’m northern Irish. If there was a vote for a united ireland to leave the U.K. then I would vote no.

I'm more concerned about resources being directed at environental issues at the moment. What we do within this decade could affect our future existence.

There's not much point in fighting over boundaries in sludge.

Good point Jac, the prods have nothing to fear from a new Ireland, they just has to accept equality and our right to be Irish in our own country and move on, their days of domination over the "Fenians" are long gone, they can call themselves British or whatever they want, sure isn't out national flag a symbol of inclusion and it also embraces the Orange..irish

professor irish

Why is the Union Jack called the butchers apron?

"The Butcher's Apron is a pejorative term for the flag, common among Irish republicans, citing the blood-streaked appearance of the flag and referring to atrocities committed in Ireland and other countries under British colonial rule."
