In your opinion, how do you make a bigger impact on people....by being heard...or by being seen???
Feb 14, 2007 7:37 AM CST I Want To Be Heard...or...Seen...
Human nature tells us to both.... be seen and heard but it doesn't always work that way. For some it's choice, while on the other hand it is perception. Often people's perception (valid or not) of someone and what they are trying to communicate gets lost in translation. It can be intentional or a simple miunderstanding. Sometimes a person is not even given a chance to be heard or seen, due to jaded perceptions. Those that are seen and heard and stand to express themselves are at times criticized. Other's stand and express themselves and cower into a corner as soon as someone tells them they are wrong.

I probably make a bigger impact by being seen. Clients are usually more impressed with seeing me on the job rather than yakking away!

The reason i am asking this is because i have been offered a new venue as a career...a Tribunal Rep (for the housing tribunal)...

Because i have worked within the court system before those that are encouraging me to do this know that i am quite capable of "arguing a point" based on facts...(I don't allow personal feelings to hinder my thought process in law)

However...I do happen to know what kind of "appearance" i have, and i'm wondering how willing would people who's "homes" are at stake here be willing to allow me to represent them....and would they have enough confidence in my ability...

Thanks Jane for putting into words what i feel daily....moping

I gave my reason for asking this question, and just from the majority of replies on the int'l forum I already know what i would be dealing with...and i'm not sure i want to be doing that at this stage in my life...many years ago you better believe i had the stamina to "take on the world"...and prove myself...now....sigh

What really really bothers me is that I asked a general question...did not imply it was about me in any way...wanted to know what people thought had the biggest impact about THEMSELVES...yet..as always..it always reverts back to the "appearance" of the poster...

And frankly i forgot i had switched my primary profile pic yesterday...just for a change...I wonder if i would have gotten a different answer if i had left the picture up of Clay and I...and is that what it really takes to get a decent answer???

I haven't even looked at the international forums to see what the others are saying...how ignorant though, that someone would look at a picture on a 'dating profile/website' and make assumptions on your abilities for a very important position based on that???

Oy vay!!! We haven't really come that far as a society, have we?

dunno doh

My friends and collegues are saying the same thing...its really more about the "confidence" i exude when i walk into a courtroom...my appearance takes second place there...

Like you i dress according to the occasion...very few people at my children's school even know i have tattoos...and when i worked at the courts before NO ONE knew i had them...back then the only thing i would allow myself was stilletto heels with my business suit...and garter belts and stockings...wink

Even now..how i dress for work is out of the norm for me, we are only allowed the "subdued" colours of navy blue, gray or tan slacks, and white shirts...which must have a collar...tongue

Urs you are a confident articulate woman I would hope that this would be seen and not your appearance. If this is a step up for you then go for it you deserve it and let no one make you feel that your appearance is anything but professional!!!

Thank you Jane! And I agree with you!

I just wish sometimes that people would see me for who I am and not how I am built frustrated

well sometimes its hard not to look. No you should not tie them or hide them, nor be asahmed of them.

Most men happen to look coz there are so sweet to look at. Hate to say it but its a natural thing for us.

It is the men who can look past them, only glaze for a sec or two, then focus on your eyes/lips in a conversation that count. These men are the mature respectable ones imo.

I found their is a group census as to what is correct or not to think pf and be, anything different scares the majority of people as they think it incorrect.
But fortunately, we are not lonely as we recognize ourselves thru others words.

my experience is a lot of seen and a little heard...Stand tall - look them straight in the eye when talking (unnerves some people)and try to say their name when saying hello.
