Ok I Have always lived in the big city till I moved here to the moutains of colorado temporarily for work purposes. Be here another year. In the last week ive had to save my dog from coyotes...chase a skunk off my deck and this morning hang out till a bear decided not to lay next to my truck. Should I buy a shotgun...hand grenades or what. Any advice for a city guy?
Not use to nature? Well sounds like nature is teaching you how to be safe with out the fire arms. Waiting for the animals to leave on thier on is a good thing. You'll get the hang of it. I've been on the country side for about 13 years now and I find it great I have had to wait for my turn to go places but that was ok with me, so please no fire arms try somthing else. Noise
Pots and Pans usually work for the bears..Just bang them together and the loud noise scares them away. Dont look it directly in the eye though they think you are challenging them...The Coyotes and the skunk, sounds like you did okay in that area..But You might want to think of a gun...Just keep it up High if there are kids in the place and have fun up there..thats what its all about..Hugs..
I too literally live at Green Acres, with the exception of Arnold the pig.
I suggest a 12 gauge if you don't mind the kick. Skunks, coyotes, snakes, raccoons, lost drunks... they all sound familiar. I sleep with a Ruger 357 magnum in the dresser next to the bed, just in case. I have had coyotes wake me out of a sound sleep at 3 am, really makes your heart pound.
Good luck with the bear, one thing that I suggest is don't leave the dog food out or leave trash cans outside. Once a bear has imprinted your place as a food source, he will continue to come back. Maybe he just likes your truck?
I've had the skunk problem.....wouldn't let me in my own front door....It finally got so bad.....I sought some help....and elderly woman suggested moth balls for the critters.....sure enough it worked.....haven't seen them since.....
Hey if the skunks tail is down you have nothing to worry. It is when it is sticking straight up that you better back off. Try a metal cage trap for the skunk and transport it far into the wilds. Be sure to cover the cage so the skunk never sees you. Thats my .02 cents.

I don't know what kind of dog you have, but get a couple more. The wild animals will feel outnumbered and will lean more towards staying away. You can get chemicals to help keep the skunks away. No need to shoot anything unless it is an emergency. But buy a shotgun anyway, one that handles buckshot and slugs well. Really, there's no need to fear any of the wild animals unless a mountain lion shows up. In this case, fire away! I've lived in the mountains of Colorado and Montana, so I know a little bit about it. Just something for you to think about.
yep...mothballs for the little critters.. make sure you keep any birdfeeders you might have around empty for bit if the bears are coming in, and keep you trash locked away. If they can't find any food or water..they will move on.
We have coyotes around here and some fox too. No bear that I have ever heard of. We have plenty of wild cats though. I rarely see a fox, we do have families of them though. They are so neat to watch. I bought binnoculars just to see them better. I love to listen to the coyotes. They are so loud though. But, they quit making all that noise shortly. I have lived in the country all my life until a few years ago. Wildlife always had a place in our life and on our land. It was theirs first. If we ever felt the need to get something to leave, we just shot the guns in the air and made noise. We once had a watermelon and cantelpoe patch to sell at the farmers market. One night we heard the loudest noises coming from around that area. We went to see. It was a pack of coyotes dancing around the patch. It was very cool, but we lost most of our crop. They ate most of them.
I just love the country. Used to couldn't wait to get away from it. I have squirrells in my back yard that have came to the bundant amount of acorns the big trees in the back produced. Two summers ago two of my neighbor's came here. It was cool. I didn't have to mow there. Trying to live in harmony with nature is better. Saw eight deer a little while back. Sometimes it sounds a war zone when the hunters start. I just it just depends on where you live, though.
Well the dogooders would say that you should talk nice to the bears and skunks as to not hurt their feelings. Just tell the bear it's not nice to eat you and he should go away....
