You have to also remember that we have a steadily increasing number of elderly now...and a good majority of them have and do live below poverty level. Continuing SS cuts, medicare cuts, and an ever increasing cost of living will cause that percentage to rise....sad. We are spending money where?? War, outer space, assisting other countries, prisons....all on our tax dollars...and our elderly...whom most of, have worked and paid taxes and social security all their lives...are living below poverty level....confused very mad frustrated

Yes, we need to take care of our own before we try to "save" the rest of the world....which, btw, did not ask to be "saved" professor

You know it is truely sad about what we do to out own country.

Now, time to piss you off, unintentionally though, most of the world lives under our poverty level. What does that say about us?

Im not bashing us, god know thats the truth, and I wish I could articulate it wish the tenderness it deserves......

we have the ability to help the ones around us, thru charities and god forbid it came down to it, our own time. yes we have people living on the street, but we have shelters, and if their someone you know- why didnt you give them a place to stay. we have people begging for mooney to eat- we have food lines for them as well, or why didnt you fix them a meal. older people dying in their own homes because the got to hot and had no monet for an AC, they had a home of their own- why didnt you give them your fan. why must you allow yourselves to depend on the government for your source of exhistance, how the hell did our parents and grandparent and theirs and theirs ever live without one hand out reached for assistance (sarcasm)?

people all over the world are suffering more than we are, we've all seen it in a fleeting moment on the news and felt what for those people and for how long? I love you guys, be stronger people than this american government bashing stuff, role up your sleeves and get to work if you truely want to help your poor.

as for you foreigners who want to bash us and our taxes, and spending habbits, etcetera, your country at some point has been the reciepient of some of our tax dollars too. clean/fix your house before you bash mine- please.

Yes, used to be that there was a lower level income, then a middle class income, then a upper class income, then the rich. Now it is below poverty, poverty, lower class, upper lower, then lower middle, then middle, upper middle, then lower upper then upper, then the rich, now the ultra rich.

With the income I receive along with my mom, it puts us in the lower class, to poverty. We barely make it. We live month to month right now. We would barely qualify for the bare minimum in food stamps. I do not know how the ones that are trying so hard, get by with less than we have, do. Forget going to Drs., and having prescriptions on low incomes. I still have scripts that I couldn't even fill.

I work for myself, and the 1099's is so unfair. I pay much more in taxes than I would if I had a regular job. And if I don't have much in write off's, then holy cow, I am screwed.

People on minimum wage have not much of a chance in this crazy world we live in. I can tell you this; if I didn't share bills with my mom, I could not afford to rent a place and have utilities and groceries and essentials. And I work!

This day and age is so gawd aweful for people to exist. It is just too sad.

So believe me when I say, I understand what poor is. Then there are those that are worse off than me.

I don't want anyone feeling sorry for me. I don't. I do the best I can under the circumstances. At least I try.

My down time and my entertainment is this, right here, my internet. I afford that because it is a package deal with our phone company. Pretty cheap. Cheaper than going out to eat and a movie once a month.

I wish we could fix things.

That's not a bad ratio considering how many people actually live in America.

a ratio is a ratio

does not matter how many the total is

that is 25 people out of every 200

and that is below the poverty level

not including those at it or slightly above it

The babies of the baby boomers. There's too many of them for us to cover and they are coming of age. Weaksauce? But I don't give a lot of thought to taxes or baby boomers or social security or the poverty crisis. I'll take my retirement into my own hands and not worry about somebody holding my hand.
