I came from a small town but I didn't join the military for those reasons you give, I joined because I wanted to give my time for my country and to help others.
Oh, I also joined for the free education, free travel and other bonuses.
Too bad I didn't stay in as I could retire with 30 in another year, but I was young and foolish then. Now I'm old and foolish
I have some presentiments that now Blair on his way backwards out (evtl facing even charges for that war ) .. the British toops will follow swiftly - leaving the mess to the US.
Blair had summed up Britain's attitude to Europe at Nice in 2000:
"It is possible, in our judgement, to fight Britain's corner, get the best out of Europe for Britain and exercise real authority and influence in Europe. That is as it should be.
Britain is a world power."
This grotesque, self-serving fantasy that 'Britain is a world power' is to justify that it will always be EU/UK. The real union is with Washington. France and Germany are seen as rivals for Washington's affections, not potential allies in an independent EU. The French decision to re-integrate themselves into NATO and pose as the most vigorous US ally was a serious structural shift which weakened Europe. Britain responded by encouraging a fragmented political order in Europe through expansion and insisted on a permanent US presence on the continent.
Respect your sentiments, but feel that Blair has too much international kudos to be held accountable.
Yes, it is a mess and I was not an advocate in the first instance of the entry into the conflict.
Now we are there, however, I believe that an immediate withdrawal would be even messier, not to mention creating a power vacuum which would not serve the best interests of the people of Iraq.
I have no illusions as to Britain being a world power. It isn’t, not anymore, the last vestiges of our colonial aspirations were stripped to the bone in the ill conceived Suez invasion.
I am curious what and when will our president do something stateside to regain the confidence of republican parents of the united states. the time is approaching for bush to help support the republican party... I hear he can throw a party and handle himself in public when drunk.
have you heard the state of texas ( bushes homeland) has a budget surplus so big that they considering dropping a gas tax for the summer months Their gasolineis currently selling for 2.87 for 9/10 but their policy makers have a bill up for consideration dropping a 20 cent tax on gasoline for the summer months....
yeah.... it is a good theing to have one of your own in the White House.... look what Clinton did for Arkansas when he was in...
but 20 cents drop in gas prices!!!!! freaking remarkable
how ever did they do it have that much money left over form a annual budget?????
someone needs to get that in print and pass it on to other states.
Had a minister of transportation some years ago, from a fairly remote spot on the coast of Norway... By the time he was done, lots of new roads, bridges and I think even tunnels were built in his part of the country...
I stand up against injustice and oprression on humanity - as I am - inspired boutstanding minds - I learned that its more scaring not standing up - then trying to make a difference
Your right his heart is in the right place but his mind isnt and thats whats necessary to fight a war. The president has change the mission of why we are in the middle east so many times it doesnt make sense, unless hes there for something else. At first we went in to find weapons of mass distruction as our main objective, once it was discovered that there were'nt any the mission changed to finding Sadam and Bin laden, half of that mission was accomplished. Then it was turned into giving the people democracy and establishing a form of congress for them, that was completed yet we are still there. Now the mission is to protect the people from themselves, which is extremely idiotic. We in the US have our own problems to solve and our president should take care of our homeland before anyone elses. When hurricane katrina hit us we had no military there to help those people and its becuase the entire national guard in that area was sent to iraq, so people had to be called up from texas and georgia.
