Please don't stop makng jokes jokes about smoking on my account. I think I can take it.
Likewise, I hope you will not be offended if I detect an underlying assumption which neutralizes the humour. I think a lot of jokes are funny because people see the truth, or what they think is the truth, in them.
I thought the movie Bulworth absolutely stunk as a comedy. Many others loved it. On the other hand, I've had many chuckles over the definition of a liberal I once heard, "Someone who would give a poor man the shirt off someone else's back."
True or false. Funny or not funny. I guess humour is largely in the eye of the beholder.
A few weeks ago, at the cab stand (an excerpt from one of my blogs):
I was having a conversation with one of the more erudite members of our community on Saturday when this, almost distraught, woman approached and interupted us.
She wanted to know if we had seen a red Jeep in the area recently.
I explained to her that we see thousands of cars in the area on a daily basis and it would be highly unlikely that we would notice any specific vehicle....
....unless there was a naked woman in the back seat.
She walked away spouting profanities. I could not be sure whether they were directed at myself, or the driver of the red Jeep she was looking for.
Obviously the woman did not appreciate my attempt at humour. But the guy I was talking to just bellowed.
