I have had the same a number of times Kitty. 
Most have come from India and Africa and one from the U.S. Just laugh girl, like you say how can you marry someone you don't know.

I know this, first comes a flower, than one or two mails and an IM-request. After this the asking for marriage.

My daughter had a guy from spain who had left africa wanting to get married so he could leave spain and come to canada. At least he was honest he said it was the only way he was allowed to leave and he did not like living in spain and did not want to go back to africa.

Its not just that much.. the issue gets too complicated as everyone must be knowing .. so dont marry someone you dont know well... would be my take on it.

I think that´s the cause. They dont wanna go back in a poor country.
I have got one mail, which the guy asked in the first mail ( after telling me, he´s falling in love with me) , Who hard it is to find work in Germany. The come to me is no problem, he has a residence permit.
Thats only scam. I delete it and block them.
