I just saw a commercial to "Give a laptop" to Children of third world countries! Increase their learning experience. Bonus, give a lap top, get one for the child in your life

Is it just me or if we're going to be helping out other countries that don't have great conditions, shouldn't we be concentrating on the fact that they need food, water, better living conditions???

Great point...

And the leaders of those 3rd world countries will confiscate the laptops anyway....

I agree in part, but we have been helping out in these ways for a long time. Education is just as important for the children and access to the outside world, albeit electronically, is a great way to further their education.

Its subjective to the palce you r talking about. And there is an immense increase in the use of laptops and PC's in 3rd world countries too.dunno

True, but they are showing children in this commercial that look like they do not have proper clothing or proper nutrition at all. One gust on wind looks like it'll knock some of them over.

Oops should be OF, not ON. Commercial just came back on. OK, at the end of the commercial, they are showing a very skinny little boy sitting in the dirt hugging the lap top. You honestly have to see the way these kids are dressed and look.

Personally, I cannot even afford a lap top for myself, let alone for a child in another country, but I'll put my money towards a place like Christian Childrens Fund first.

Yes, education is very important, but what good is an education if they aren't getting the medication or the nutrition that they'll need to grow up and use that education.....

Good Heavens !!!
Angel i know what youmean.. sorry dear .. now i get it..

The actual issue is the Advertsement and the publicity. Think for a minute the fastest growing economies in the world are III world countries. If they were in such dire states it wouldnt be possible. Accepted that electricity and basic amentites is an issue but not as it gets portrayed .. thats too exaggerated !!!

Onthe other hand, III world countries torn by famine , war , cyclone like in Indonesia right now, civil war are the ones who r in dire economic states and have no basic funds or facilities.

III world countries is a very broad generalisation and it includes a lot of countries which are doing quite good.

So the adv. is misguiding and quite depressing in fact to show something so terrible. You know to show children in such a state of poverty and malnutrition speaks volumes about the economic crunch the country must be in. Needless to say political turmoil, civil war, diseases and natural calamities.. something must be a part of the parcel.

its quite depressing to see advertisements misguide this way !!!

Well you know all those are scams, the Christian Children’s Fund did a fund raiser for a tribe of Indians out west somewhere and received a land slide of money. The Tribe just wanted a new school built. Over 2 billion dollars was collected, and the tribe received nothing.

Quite possible ...

There is no III world as such ... its an economic divide which has a totally changed basis now.

Most of the countries have internal issues due to which their growth is suffering and are under huge debt or mercy of the UN or World Bank.
So helping this way is no good. The root cause needs to be challenged. mumbling

I think its a guilt trip factor. Thinking that by showing a child that looks starving in deplorable conditions will get more donations than a child who looks like they are well fed and well dressed. To me though, that makes me want to send food rather than a lap top.

Medicines given to kill the worms in their bellies are to be taken for several days. The biggest problem is getting them to not take them all at once. The almost all do. There thinkin is that if one works good then all works better, Also they may be stolen. How can people of this understanding handle a computer. I know that some can handle it, but what real good will it be......shopping on ebay! Adding and subtracting.....pencil and paper. I get amaze at what people will do in order to make a dollar. Buy them a bundle of salvage clothes for them to sell at the markets like so many others there do. They can make money and feed the family. Buy them a saw and a cart with an animal to haul.....then they can open a wood yard or make charcoal to sell. Computer.....silly!

Thats what it is.. they play with the viewer's psychology.. probably they should help stop ammunition supplies and religious slaughter in these countries than try to help them by helping their own self ....
Its disgusting !!!!!!!!

The website is better. I just checked it out. They actually show some fairly well dressed children. A few that are still pretty darn skinny.

The site says "Give One Get One program will specifically benefit Afghanistan, Cambodia, Haiti and Rwanda"

Looks more like a promotion for this new XO laptop though.

Afghanistan needs religious tolerance , awareness and political stability
LAPTOP is not their 100th requirement even. There still exists slaughter in the name of pride , religion and rules.

Cambodia , Rwanda , Haiti good lord !! PC wont solve their problems.
Civil war or political unrest needs a stability on the governance front then comes everything else. .. food , medicines ...everything !!
