DUBLINGUY1973: Good point, Claire. They could retaliate I wonder if the police deal with nuisance calls. There must be some procedure in place to deal with freaks like that

Oh I still agree with doing it.. I would wait a few moments.. in this case.. as they don't seem to mind hanging about on the phone.

To lull them into a false sense of security.. (and to be certain it wasn't family/work)..

then I would suck in the biggest breath EVER... and blow that whistle until my lungs almost fell into it!

'They' would think twice before calling back for a while.

THEN!

I would be looking for the person (around me) then next day.. with the seemingly sore ear.. or 'Off sick'

laugh

DUBLINGUY1973: This person is clearly annoying you and understandably so so why not turn the tables on them? I'd get a whistle similar to what referees use in sports and each time the person says nothing, blow the whistle down the phone until they hang up. Trust me, if they value their hearing, they will get fed up and quit harrassing you. I hope this helps

good advice,or you can change your number, you can also get one of your male friends to make a recording for you and have him say a few "not so nice things" just for your caller,I know what you mean though, been there and done that and I just changed numbers,it can be annoying to say the least and change your life if it continues.conversing

or (D) something else....please advise

I'd change the number
and give only a handful of close people my new number.

Keep the old one alive for those who you doubt...
and one by one give out your other number...

Every few days ... another person that new number.

Once the nuisance calls
start on the new phone, you should know it the last person
you gave that number to.

BUT,
I personally treasure my number
so have one mobile for friends
one for work
and one I call
"the Smutty Phone"

The number to this phone I give out,
to people answering an add,
or strangers
or possible dates.

Or have a man answer the phone.

You could record a mens voice on tape and play it back to him. conversing laugh

jlb684: Scenario:
Almost every night since 20 February, I have been receiving very late night phone calls on my cell phone. Very late...often 3am, sometimes 1 am, but always after midnight. The caller says absolutely nothing...no heavy breathing, no words....nothing. The display on my phone reads "Private Number". I do not like to turn my cell phone off at night because (a) my father has been gravely ill in the U.S. and I want to be able to be reached if needed, (b) my land line is not 100% reliable all of the time, and (c) I need to be reached for my job, if needed. I have spoken to our telephone service folks and they tell me that they cannot trace a private number; I have reported this to our security officers. I know I can change my number, but if this caller is someone that I thought I knew and trusted (but somehow misjudged), I will likely be giving that person my new number as well. Changing numbers is a real hassle and I cannot be sure that I won't still have the problem. I am losing sleep, I am annoyed, and I want to stop this. Would you
(A) change numbers and give your new number to all your current contacts
(B) simply turn phone off at night and hope nobody back home needs to reach you
(C) continue to hang up on the caller and hope that he will soon tire of this game (some nights I receive 4 or 5 such calls, so my sleep is interrupted even if I hang up immediately)
or (D) something else....please advise

How about try and get the "Other Guys" to do something about it.
They usually have ways and means the regular Security Guys don't have at their disposal.
dunno uh oh cool

I'd get a cheap pay as you phone, give the number to my father and to work and turn my other phone off at night, after a few weeks the silent caller will give up as not getting any response, you sleep peacefully knowing you can be reached in an emergency and don't have to change your number.
