wedward: austria is one of the friendlist and clean countries in the world and having been to most of them i choose to live here

I can vouch for that.

I have lived in five countries and the one that I have enjoyed the most has been Austria.

People have a view that Austrian people are boring, but they are not at all, they are smart, intelligent, take care of their country and are wonderful welcoming people.

It is interesting debate, I see how people look at British people and they feel that we are polite, or we get drunk alot and fight.

We are seen as polite because we often open a sentence with 'I am sorry' so people find it amusing why we open a sentence with an apology, Americans come right out with it, which is why they are seen as loud.

Each country has it's own people who are different, the Austrian people are not highly emotional people, they are sorted and do not do emotional drama, they get on with it and deal with their problems.

When I lived in Bahrain, I loved the natives there, but the British put me off, they were all drunk.

We are a very class driven kingdom, maybe that is because of the Royal Family, but I do think that.

You should try living in the Middle East, they are all hammered out there, sun, and lots of alcohol. I hated every moment of it, Europe is so civilised.

Malta is not, sadly, ready for you yet!

Malta caters for mass tourism; especially a particular part of Malta in which some hotels offer holidays that include 'free local beer and wine' in their 'full board' prices. It catered for the 'fish and chip' brigade, but now seems a lot nicer than it used to be.

Gozo is much smaller and caters more for people who want to get away from it all and prefer a little peace and quiet; more the type who like to privately rent a villa with a pool.

I must admit I really like Gozo, but it's also been fun to get on the ferry to visit friends in Malta for an occasional night out.

That sounds delightful, Rusty, I am sure it is, I love quiet peaceful holidays, such as this, but I chose to come here this year and have a nice peaceful holiday at my house.

Tough question since it is so much about having time to get in touch with a place, something not always possible.

People
Most friendly (as in welcoming and genuinely interested) Romania
Least friendly (not welcoming and sometimes hostile) Vanuatu (they did use to be cannibals, you know)

City - For fun and party
Top - Bucharest first and Melbourne second
Low - Where I live now laugh

Both in Melbourne and in Bucharest you could go out alone, have a beer and strike a conversation with just about anyone and you would have a great time. Bucharest wins simply because it is 24/7 there while Melbourne has ordinary Aussie restrictions to things, they are quite a few.

City - Living and getting around
Top – Dublin, it is just a great place in spite of the weather
Low - Kuala Lumpur - Hot, noisy and "teeny" (think small screamy gadgets with flashing lights in all possible pastel colours). Impossible traffic.

cold

It's impossible to make a judgement based solely on holidays spent in various cities.

If, like me you spend time working in different cities around the world, you get the opportunity to meet people and make real friends. This is when you realise that actually, people are friendly and welcoming wherever you are.

Of course there are cultural differences, and some nationalities are initially more friendly and open, but at the end of the day friendship and warmth can be found anywhere in the world.

Very well said. When I saw this thread I started thinking about the places I have visited and to be honest I could not make up my mind which city is my favourite... so yes I totally agree that friendship and warmth can be found anywhere.

Very true. I do not even dare to speak about places I have just passed through, because a flash experience can get very wrong and has nothing to do with the place.

But there are differences, big once I must say. It depends on who you are as a person as well as from where you are, and this in combination with the "culture" at the location.

In Russia, Moscow, I have only good experience in getting in touch with people since a Swede is considered more or less a "brother", while a German colleague was accepted with a lot more caution.

I teach in a Swiss owned multi national company here and many of the consultants are German.

I can honestly say that the Russians in this company have nothing but respect and regard for their German visitors. The only negative comments I've heard have been about the Swiss. That in itself is nothing I pay too much heed to as it is largely due to the fact that the Russian employees have had to change their working practises to suit those of the Swiss, and of course this kind of change is hard to deal with for some people.

We should be careful about making wholesale presumptions about any nationality.

I count myself as very fortunate to have been born British. I don't really understand why because I don't believe it's deserved, I'm speaking on behalf of the British not me, but I've been treated with nothing but respect wherever I go in the world.

Now you all go in for a huge surprise....when I visited New York and Boston in 1976 for the first time travelling alone, I was amazed of the friendlyness everybody, from street poets to police guys, from train stewardess to airport custom officers bestowed on me, even the Chicano gang boss in Boston gave me such a caring treatment when he heard me talking in spanish to him.....don t know if everybody would have been as nice if they would have known I am Cherokee on my dad´s side :-)
Next to this experience, I always loved the cheerful, open and sweet attitude of people from Andalucia,Spain and I ve been roaming around Europe since childhood.
There are people who are defintely boring and that is what they find, may they travel wherever they go. As for me, I love roaming around and learn new things, meet new people,.....must be my nomad blood

I agree with you on Belgium but it s not only there it s all cold Europe like that people live indoors usually. They dont want to be disturbed a lot.If you are fresh meat who just got in,you ll be squeezed in a few years.

Ever been in Turkiye.I can not say anything on the people.I d rather listen to your comments. But it s country where you can swim in 0 meters and climb up to 1700 meters the same day and spend the nite there. With the howling wolves.

I ve never faced the wolf face to face but i know they digged the intestines of a goat that i have buried at nite.

I waited for them to show up one nite after midnite, sitting far from the house in the dark.I whispered ''Come on I m also a creature who lives on this planet''but they did not show up.I thought it s the aftershave which was not blonging there and that keep em away.
