I have the same problem, but found out that Citronella oil is a very good natural oil that seems to repel mosquitoes. I use it often at this time of year, as if I am putting perfume on. I put some oil directly on the skin behind my ears and on my wrists and behind my knees.

The most common -- and most effective -- are Clove oil and citronella (rose geranium) are the most effective against mosquitos, but be careful with clove oil and use it sparingly -- it can be a skin irritant. Other fairly effective essential oils include: Lemon grass, eucalyptus, castor oil, peppermint, tea tree oil, lavender, and cedar. You can buy cedar oil in spray-on bottles at your local pet store.

It's important to remember when using essential oils: Don't use them internally! They need to be used externally on your skin and garments. Be sure to test any oils on a small patch of skin before applying widely to your body to avoid allergic reactions or skin irritations.

You can make your own insect repellent sprays by combining rubbing alcohol (or witch hazel, vodka, or olive oil) with one of the listed essential oils (about 10-to-1, alcohol-to-oil ratio). Shake well before each use.

To make a lotion, use: 2 ounces distilled water, 2 ounces olive oil, and about 120 drops essential oil. Put the water into a deep mixing bowl, and using a wire whip, begin beating quickly while slowly drizzling in the olive oil. After oil is mixed into the distilled water, stir in the essential oil of your choice (citronella is probably the most effective for insect repellent use).

Hey Maruska!...thank you so much for the recipes...!!!...really, I'm gonna try some of these.....I'm getting eaten alive here.....Malta has some of the most vicious mosquitoes I've ever seen.....fortunately, they are also some of the dumbest.....they just sit there waiting to be smacked.....very slow moving....obviously very well-fed....

ehmm....what about if I just DRANK the vodka??....do you think that would work too??..

applause

I've tried all the remedies available, both over the counter and mixing various ingrediants, the best one so far is citronella, but the smell is disgusting, but even using that I still get bitten., We don't have that many here, shortage of trees and water helps. worst place I have been for mossies is Greece, I arrive there and they

I don`t believe any of you! You all making this up about mosquitos - its too contraditory!

I have heard the zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz of a mosquito, then it landed on me, was silent, then could feel it biting - was that the male or the female?

I once lived in a caravan, had a mosquito net, and that net got eaten to shreds by mosquitos trying to get at me ..... I watched while they did "something" whatever it was to "chew" thru the strands! I was forever sewing closed their holes they`d bored into it!

..... then I discovered Snake Oil, and that was the end of my mosquito story!

I have noticed that my one grandkid that eats far too much sweet stuff and junk food gets bitten to pieces by mossies - they do seem to prefer "sweet" blood? Even without Snake Oil on me, they only attempt to bite me if they realy desperate!... too much cayene, tobacco, whisky in my blood?

Oh its easy! You just milk the venom glands of a Puff Adder, but then you got to mix that with other stuff, which is the secret that only I possess. Sometimes you can also use the venom of the Boomslang, thats the green mamba, but only at certain times of the year.... depending on the rainfall patterns and whether or not the Baobabs have flowered, which also depends on the flowering times of the Aloes along the coastlines of the East Coast of AFrica, which heralds the influx of the sardines from up the West Coast of Africa, which also depends on the flow of the Mozambican warm water currents....... Yes, I do realise all this is rather complicated, but thats why only I am able to make this particular oil.
