Current wisdom says whoever does the asking should stump up the cost.....
Sensible thinking would say splitting the bill leaves no opening for either party involved to feel they "owe" or are "owed"anything to the other.
For me, seeing dating and love to be taken out for meals.... just shouts one word, "meal ticket !!"

Once we went out on a huge family dinner. My ex-father in law found pieces of glass in his food. The restaurant picked up the tab for everyone. Abt $200.00. Also paid for the Emergency room visit.

If I guy invites me to dinner and drinks I feel he should pay for dinner and I will pay for some of the drinks.

I like to pick up the bill on a date, I would feel odd if I didn't although I have been on dates where the lady insisted :)
I also like to open a door for people, not just ladies though, its just polite right ?
