I don't mind gyms really....what I do mind is having to shower with 20 other males...every time I ask, when I join a new gym, if, in my case they could make an exception, and allow me to shower with the girls.....but outside of one time, I don't seem to receive a positive reaction to that request....

FlowerOfTheSun: Ok you are probably right BUT nevertheless, gyms became a necessity of modern life when people started leading "unhealthy" lives with little exercise and poor diets ...

My grandmother lived till the age of 90 odds and was very strong and healthy apart from the very last few years but I garanty she never set foot in a gym

wow, I was wrong then right and back to maybe. Of course I'm right. If you wanna get slim, go to a gym. Good ol' grandmother. Hope I live as long. She didn't live in today's world tho', did she?conversing

I am not recommending anyone go on a 'get slim diet'. I agree that a 'little but often' nutritious diet is one of the major keys to healthy living. I am not suggesting either that anyone and everyone who doesn't go to a gym will lack all forms of physical fitness and will, by necessity, be a jelly-like blob. Why do some people always drag out arguments to such a ridiculous degree?

I am stating that everyone who goes to a gym, and who follows a sensible fitness plan when there, will feel the benefits of doing so. A modern lifestyle is unhealthy not only because of processed food but also lack of space. This lack, together with an all-too-often overuse of private or public transport, leads to a level of unhealthy inactivity that can be best combatted by a regular visit to the local gym. Moreover, people tend to follow structured fitness plans much better than any unstructured attempts they might make alone. And, no matter how fit and toned you might be, even you would find benefits from following a formal healthy exercise plan.

Life is just so much more complicated than munching a carrot and pushing your kids around the park.

Yeah!!! and Nah!!!

When I'm happy I put on a bit of weight which is more than welcome as I'm usually on the skinny side of slim even though I don't have to watch what I eat ... or rather I do ... I have to make sure I eat loads or I get skinny ...

smoky: You know those "Super Body" Hi-Tec Gyms? ... where you got to sign on for a minimum of 6 months, or get a discount for a years membership ....... AND IF YOU HAVE ....... Did you stick to the regime the instructor set for you? ... or did you give up?

How long did you last going minimum 3 times a week? and if you did give up , WHY DID YOU GIVE UP?

If you did not give up ...... WHY NOT?

I've never joined a gym in my life although I've been to some for fun

I've done tai-chi and yoga (the only times I've followed orders) and done swimming but I have never joined a gym..

oooohhh hang on... I did once "have" to join a gym where I did weights after a bike crash.... I had to build one of my legs back to normal.

apart from that, I've never needed a gym till perhaps now... and now that I wouldn't really mind going to one there are two factors that make it difficult

1 - no one to go with
2 - lack of time (I know... I could be at the gym instead of here!) but as usual, thjere's always something better to to than self inflicted pain just for the fun of it.. and alone on top of that!rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing

You did when you stated that anyone who doesn't go to the gym is not looking after their body (or words to that effect) ... you also stated "if you want to get slim, go to the gym"

As for this statement:

"Life is just so much more complicated than munching a carrot and pushing your kids around the park"

Why do you have to sound so down putting and generalising? Some of us don't "munch carrots" or "push kids around the park" some of us eat slow carbohydrates at every meal AS WELL AS other vegetables and meat (I am not vegetarian) and or raw veg/fruit /cereals etc. My kids are both over 20 soooooooooooo it's a long time since I "pushed them around the park" although I have been known to run around a park with my grandchildren recently!!! laugh And btw I recently started a formal healthy exercise plan: salsa dancing rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing although I am sure that a more "traditional gym one" would reach some parts that salsa doesn't ... Salsa is sooooooooooooo much more fun!!! dance elephant dancing

I didn't say that you eat carrots or push your children around the park, did I? And salsa dancing is a wonderful form of cardiovascular exercise for the older lady. There comes a time in life when you naturally need to slow down anyway. And Salsa is loads of fun for everyone, young or old.

When somebody says, "if you want to be slim, go to a gym", it means that going to a gym is a good way to keep in shape. Can you really formulate an argument against this statement?

Anyone who doesn't take regular exercise is doing his/ her body a diservice. A body should be considered a machine and, just like a machine, needs maintaining properly.

For me, this maintainance involves not smoking, drinking only in moderation, eating well and taking structured exercise.

The ommission of any one of these four factors is a sign of not respecting yourself as fully as you might. This is a water-tight obvious fact that really cannot be argued with sensibly, I believe.

Good luck with the dancing. Don't over do it. el guirilips

I'll make sure I'm still doing it when I'm older!!! There is a couple of other things that are also good cardiovascular exercise for the older lady ... and I fully intend to still be doing that too when I'm older!! rolling on the floor laughing

Your argument is defenately water-tight ... just as well coz I don't swim that well!! laugh although I still don't like the sound of the "structure bit"...

maybe it's just your reaction to the word 'structure'. Perhaps brings back memories of an overstrict formal education and being whipped by nuns savagely without mercy until you were too sore to sit. Who knows?

I only mean by 'structured' an organised systematic approach to exercise as opposed to, say, buying a pair of running shoes and jogging around the nearest park. There is nothing wrong with jogging, except it kills some people's knees, but, based on my experience, someone is more likely to continue with the gym and get better results than going it alone. handshake

That's the problem I think. That's why you feel the need to criticise even my most irrefutable truths. You correctly perceive me as a superior being and it brings out the rebel in you, rolling on the floor laughing

All the above made very interesting reading! ...... I got something to say now. Quiriman - some words of wisdom I gained a few years ago was this .... "You gotta practice now for how you want to be when you old - because ones ways get more radical and entrenched as the years go by, and no-one wants to end up a quarelsome narrow minded old git".

The way you arguing here with Flower, and sort of putting her down, sounds like you are rather fanatical about your gym? Tis not Everyone that needs structured excercise, some folk, especially the Enlightened ones are able to manage their bodies very well - and I do believe that the photographs of Flower prove this?! Also ..... sometimes it is not the outside of the body that tells the story .... its what is going on inside ... hence the heart-attacks that happen to some folk in their 30`s! or the cancer growths, and the other insidious illnesses that are on the increase.

And don`t knock dancing! It is one of the very best all-round excercises for the entire body - I know - I used to be a ballroom and latin competition dancer, and there is nothing to beat a few regular hours of dancing - it tones the whole body - muscular, skeletal and cardiovascular - and gives the body a sleek well proportioned shape - as well as being good for deportment.

Now, get back to practicing for your old age - there is nothing more appealing than a well-spoken debonair and charming Old Man!cheers dancing

smoky: Okay, so you are giving a good indication of your mind-set here! ... Except its all a bit different, sort of ....... I think in the long run its gonna work out a bit more expensive, what with all the doctor bills and medical treatments. At least at the gym you just gotta be more careful about washing your hands after using the equipment?
