I would never suggest to anyone that they seek a mate in a church - I would go further and say that would be a very scary thing to attempt!

You know how hospitals are for the sick? Well churches are for sinners. You want to find a "good" person, then look in the places serving the destitute, poor, and downtrodden .. amongst the workers there you will find "good" people. Or just anywhere, but most definitely not in a church!

In my life I have yet to come across Real People in a church. Those are seekers of truth, and it depends on the church wether or not they are offering Truth to their people. I have found more honest, decent, truthful people in places that a church person would never enter or be seen near to. The only people who have ever harmed me by their lies and slander have been church members, and it would appear that the more "devout" and "highly esteemed" they are - the less they are to be trusted.

Nothing has changed in 2000 years.

trish123: Hi HL, just a small point here - spiritual practices are not limited to people who attend churces - there are also many other ancient spiritual facets of personality which dont necesitate going to church for their validation - just thought Id mention many profiles here say 'spiritual but not religious' - Im an Atheist too but certainly not an un-spiritual person - thought it worth a mention

wave Hi Trish!!! I love you so much and have missed talking with you. Work has kept me sooooo busy lately.

Now I am currious, as you are athiest. Spiritual practices? YOU?
I see so much GOOD in YOU Trish. I truely LOVE you!!! I know that I am a special friend to you too. I am not validating the church here. I have gone beyond the church. I have found much falseness in churches, yet I learned in 20 years, very much through the spiritfilled churches. I do not live by any "doctrine". I despise "religion". I believe in many other things in which churches teach against. Some may refer to it as "New Age" teaching. All I can say is that the Holy Spirit has led me to this level, and that Spirituality has different levels. As it also has many different beliefs.

Please correct me if I am wrong here, but I have thought athiesism to mean that a person would have no Spiritual connection to anything. It would mean what will be will be, self is responsible for all. According to your comment, I am totally wrong in my perception. ??? Perhaps you are not athiest at all??? I am being friendly and ignorant here. Enlighten me please. I only wish to gain understanding. Or could athiesism be like christianity, many different kinds with different beliefs? dunno

just think for a moment HL - spiritual people and spirituality did exist before Christianity

- just because I reject theism doesnt mean I reject all other forms of goodness and seeking - I am most definitely an atheist, dont ever doubt that one -

the use of the word spirit was in existence long before the word 'holy' became a common preface for it teddybear

I love you too and am sure we will get to chat more when the time is right teddybear hug handshake wave

Well, wait a sec...are you an atheist? Or are you an agnostic?

Do you believe in a "higher power", be it Mother Earth or whatever? Or do you believe that we (man kind) are "it"? The highest you can go?

Cuz if this is the highest we can go...stop the train and let me off! laugh

What you have stated here is true. Very sad but TRUE!
I have served the destitute, poor and downtrodden, on my own and have never had any support from the churches. Even the people would not give of their time. Even some Pastors advised people who helped me feed the homeless in Fort Worth, NOT to do it, or they would become just like them!!! This is ABSURD!!! The people really enjoyed going and singing and feeding the homeless. They quit doing it cos the Pastor told them not to! I do not listen to man. I listen to the Spirit within me who says to do it! I only went to church in latter years, for the WORSHIP, cos I love to worship my Lord! It is a personal thing, as it should be for all.

Many churches DO hurt people, and this should not be! I did find that going to church for coorporate worship was like filling up my gas tank so that I could continue ministering to the destitute, poor and needy.
It's all in personal choice. I worship at home these days and continue to find strength in the Love of God, which he will give, no matter where you are.

Sorry that was such a rushed reply HL - Im speaking to my Grandson at the same time - Ive actually been thinking of starting a thread cos I see many people dont really understand what is meant by atheism and that folks often react to us with a gut reaction or learned behaviour of hatred or fear so thank you so much for asking the question and I promise a much fuller explanation when it is a) not jumping into somebody elses thread and b) when I have a little more time and I would very much aprecciate your questions too as I know they will be constructive handshake hug

And hey all, correct me if I'm wrong (its been known to happen!) but don't most churches have, like, a singles thing? A dance or something? To try and enjoin the single, lost souls that attend? Like a barn dance or something?

Just askin.....
