turkish republic of northern cyprus, does only exist in the minds of politicians in Ankara!
I suggest you read accurate history of Cyprus.....the Greeks have no legitimate right to any of the Island. The Greeks after the British hastily left, were responsible for ethnic cleansing, putting a corrupt military junta in charge of civilian population. It is a shame that you hold these views. The politicians are trying very hard for some sort of agreement for the whole island,to bring peace and prosperity.Remember the song "Give peace a chance". Or will you be bitter all your life, and if an agreement happens, will you form EOKA terrorists again?? I'm glad I chose the North to live.Turkish Cypriots are such lovely people.
Thank you Sharon,I hope to fing friends with both Turkish and Greek Cypriots.Read my reply re histoty of the island. One day the world will find out the real reasons Turkish troops had to come to save the Turkish Cypriots

If the Greeks have no legitimate right, then neither do the Turks!
I've been to Cyprus both before and after the island was split up.
I remember Kyrenia being a totally integrated town of both Turkish and Greek Cypriots............ Cyprus should belong to Cypriots - whatever their ethnic background!
I also remember Archbishop Mikarios (probably spelt incorrectly) - he had been a terrorist against us Brits before he became a political leader - I hope this history is in the past, and that all of Cyprus can reunite and have a prosperous future.
lapta: I never claimed that Turkey has rights!!Just that Greeks have no rights. I pray to God /Allah that the island becomes Cypriot !!!
Good luck with your new life in Cyprus.
I have lived here for over eight years now and have loved every single second I have been here. It is an amazing place to live and the people are as warm as the weather. You may notice I have not said which part of Cyprus I live in, that is because, to me, Cyprus is Cyprus and as a Brit in Cyprus I do not believe I have the right to be overly vocal about how the Cypriots should run the island. Particularly, as I have found everyone has their own slant on this piece of history.
In my opinion, if the UK was a better place to be I would never have come to live in Cyprus. I am certainly not on my own. Every day more and more are leaving the UK for a better life abroad. Interestingly, the Cypriots are returning to Cyprus.
Welcome to Cyprus, may you be as happy living here as I am.

The Greeks killed all those Armenians over the objections of the Turks? Why do you think Turkey has a problem to join the EU? Cyprus is one of them!
Thank you Happy Bunny.I have been holidaying in Turkey for many many years....and love the culture,history,food,people...that's why I chose the North part of the island..<toned down where I live too> I hope I enjoy as much as you. Maybe we can meet in the capital soon Mike xx

well hello hello Mr Historian
I have to hand it to you, you are really putting things into their rightfull place here, history and all !
But lets do this together now, if you will join me: **thankies
You created a thread named "turkish republic of northen cyprus" and Conrad (A.K.A. the Don) very accurately noted that THAT thing only exists in the minds of the generals in Ankara (and perhaps in yours also).
Reading all through this thread, i didnt notice anyone bringing up issues of who has rights over the island (greeks, turks, brits or i dont know what) except you my friend, who seem to confuse the Greeks with the Cypriots and the Turks, again with the cypriots.
Ok, facts:
1) Cypriots can be distincted based on ethnic origin to: Greek-cypriots (78%), turkish-cypriots (18%), latins, armenians and maronites (4%). they are however ALL cypriots, in the same manner that Americans can be dinstincted to germans, brits, irish etc depending on where their ancestral blood lines are traced.
2) You are right, Turkish cypriots are truly lovely people. As are greek-cypriots and every cypriot i have ever met in my life - and they are tons. But your comment "i am glad i am staying in the north... etc" insinuates that THEY are the "good" ones, while the rest are the "bad"?? It is minds like that that brought devastation on that little corner of paradise, long before the turks actually invaded the island.
3) What you refer to as "turkish republic of northen cyprus" or "TRNC", is actually a pretty big area of the island (37%) that is OCCUPIED (yes, that means with soldiers and tanks and garrissons and mindfields, the works), after turkey invaded the island on 15/07/1974 and 20/08/1974. Their were looking for a reason to invade and get a grip on a part of this strategically placed island ever since cypriots kicked you brits off the island in 1959. And the GREEK junta (not cypriot) military coop in cyprus just a week earlier provided just the right "justification" for turkey to intervene to "restore the constitutional order"
4) Well, they didnt really restore that constotutional order, did they now? Nooooo, they have been holding almost half the island under heavy military occupation (estimated 80.000 soldiers stationed there - island's population 700.000) for 34 years now.
5) Both greek-cypriots AND turkish-cypriots are SUFFERING from the turkish occupation for all these years. the deep military para-state in turkey has implemented a plan to bring settlers from turkey to the island. Now, the settlers outnumber the original greek-cypriots in the north. Go on, since you'll be living there, ask any cypriot if he likes all this...
And some personal touch, besides the facts: Cyprus has joined the EU in 2004 as a whole island, not just the south part. That means that turkey has under occupation a part of the EU. You are European. Europe recognises that it is because of the military occupation that the laws of the EU cannot take effect on the northen part. Now they are hosting talks that everyone wishes will lead to the resolvment of the problem and the reunification of cyprus whithin the EU. The biggest problem in this talks is that turkey, that controls through the heave presence of it's army the north part, doesnt want to give up it's "intervention rights"
Get that? Intervention rights. That means that is solution is reached and the island reunifies, turkey will have the right to military intervention in EU.

Those dark pages of the islands history are indeed in the past for years now.
that island is now a fully integrated member of the EU, with a standard of living approaching the top of the EU's most advanced countries. The only thing that is holding back the whole of the island is the Turkish military presence and their intervention in everything that goes on on the island
