I have a vague recollection that in the last elections in America, there was some cafuffle about voting machines - cant remember exactly but some people distrusted them I believe (that may be a bit of an understatement) and some broke or something - have they made improvements to them yet does anybody know? and which types of machines are going to be used this time?
PUNCH CARD SYSTEMS • Instructions should include directions to check for hanging chads and to review the ballot. • Provide voters with information regarding what constitutes a spoiled ballot and a clear and no-fault system for replacing a spoiled ballot so the voter can vote on a new ballot. • Ensure that routine maintenance has been completed before Election Day, including making sure the voting machines are free of chads.
Fallingman: I knew someone would say this. I didn't think even Republicans pretended about this any more.
Well, you invited it by saying what you did, silly. What pretense? Anyway, you're in Ireland, so all that you can know is what the media says, thereby you're forgiven.

and you were at the counts in Florida? and in the Supreme Court in Florida? and in the US Supreme Court?
of course not. you got the information from the same sources. You just choose not to believe it...

so, is everything sorted out now? is everybody happy about the counting system this time or are some still dubious and is it all computerised now or are there still other types of machines being used in other places

Some places still use the old system, I believe. I don't know why. Many do use computers now. If all would change to that, we would never have that issue again.

Fallingman....I am in Florida....have run voting princits as a clerk since the early 90s. This will be my 6th Presidential.
I know you will not believe this. But the GWB election win. Was conducted to the best process and standards we had at the time.
The difference was within a state mandtory recount of less 1/2 percent. The DEM (behind) were offered to recount every county in the state or any ones of choice.
They choose three predominately DEM counties that they thought the difference could have been made up in.
Those three counties were recounted by a inspectors of all three parties REP/DEM/IND....here comes into play the hanging chads. The computer card were punched by a little pin devices.....sometimes the piece of paper would hang. If so the computer reading them, would not read them. So they did a visual inspection of the ballot with hanging chads. After reviewing the ballots in these three contries....altering the vote by some 216 ....GWB still won the state by 560.
So where does stealing the election come into play? Give me one area that we could have done better or made it more fair?
Likely if you want....come to Florida on your next vacation.....and I will see if I can get you into the counties election offices that were recounted.....you can look at the nearly 200,000 ballots that were recounted.....and find where GWB stole it. They like still have them. Be my guest.
Accross the state, we have used a different method of voting for since then. Paper ballot trail with a scanning decive to read the marks. A very few counties in the country still use the butterfly computer cards of that time.

There's a fairly watchable film about this floating around on DVD,
It's called "Recount". If memory serves it was done by HBO.
