phoenix: The ice caps aren't that old..The last 'ice age ' was 20,000 years or so ago..we are due one(ice age). The ice melts, raising sea levels and making big storms and in the process induces the odd volcano to explode..Throwing loads of dust about, blocking out the sun...And hi presto ice age.. Then the sun whacks out a couple of solar flares, thaws the earth and mother nature starts all over...Don't worry smoky it wont happen in your grandkids life...Maybe theres...

confused

Nort pole ice cap is 2.7 million years old, but almost gone now.

Go easy with the numbers mate...

Sorry mike....

following is an extract from the paper...

"As far as we can tell this has not happened for at least 20,000 years. The real shock is that it has happened so quickly with ice formed in the winter melting by the summer...

And another source...

There have been many warm periods, such as when the dinosaurs lived and many cold periods, such as the last ice age of about 20,000 years ago. During the last ice age much of the northern hemisphere was covered in ice and glaciers, and, as this map from the University of Arizona shows, they covered nearly all of Canada, much of northern Asia and Europe, and extended well into the United States..

But what is weird is, it ties in more or less with the mayans...they reckoned it was 26,000 yrs...whats a few zeros between muckers..cheers

The ice on top of the very pole is really floating on sea water and is thinner than it was 10 000 years ago, when we entered a "warm" period.

But the formation of the ice cap in the nort is that old, 2.7 million years.

What happens is of course that over warm periods it melts off the waters and at an increasing speed. I am not convinced we are the source of the melting, as the measruments in the antartic does not support the numbers at all.

About 15 000 years ago ( I am not 100% on the years) the variation in temperatures were 7 degrees celcius a YEAR.... No people heating up the world then dunno

But the age of the Northern Ice cap is really 2.7 million years, though I think the oldest ice they found so far is on greenland, as there is not water below with currents to melt it.

Journalists.... well, they are people, them too.

If you are really interested I will speed up the other computer and send a few links, with the real numbers, unfiltered by journalists or politicians. They do not support the "global warming caused by humans" - theory.

The oldest ice so far found is in the south. 8 million years, under some debris from an old vulcano eruption, btw. wow

This thread is supposed to be about "Love" - and now we onto re-cycled metals!rolling on the floor laughing

..... Seeing as how we on this subject ... WHERE did the metals come from in the First place? When you talk about "saving energy" by using re-cycled metals ..... is energy used to get them out of the ground originally?.... or is that called "using up natural resources"? .... like in paper manufacture?

Gold mines are virtually depleted, diamonds are mined, oil is pumped out of underground natural reservoirs, coal is mined and burnt, forests are chopped down, dams are built........... Does this not displace the original balance of the planet? (excuse my ignorace - I seek enlightenment)cheers

These days we recycle just about every Resource..
And I have serious doubts that Humans are important enough in the Scheme of things to do some serious Climate-or other Change to this Planet, barring maybe an Insane Nuclear Exchange among all the Nuclear Powers on Earth, and even then life would go on.
Might see some Super Intelligent Roaches and Rodents.dunno conversing wave

Interesting!

I once read a book, published by the author, a journalist for BBC, whom publishing houses refused to publish, because it was so contradictory to modern thought. He claimed to have found a tribe of folk, descendents of an ancient culture, up in the mountains where the Mayans traded in their time, who enlightened him on the way the world was going - claiming future water shortages and melting of the ice - because of industrialisation. They apparently sent some of their youth out into the world to be educated and keep track of this disintegration. (dunno )

Like any ancient culture their history was verbal, and this journalist unravelled much about the mysteries of the Mayans and Incas - refuting modern versions of their gold icons and means of trade.

Wish I could recall the name of the book/author! Had photographs too.cheers
