What it means is that they missed out on interacting with a terrific person and quite possibly getting to know that person.wave

drinking I don't bother with the im thing until I've gotten to know a bit about the person the hard way-through email. It is a bit more difficult, but at least it weeds out people that don't interest me.bouquet

Well..... I dont know about anyone else, but I treat IMing as sort of a way to get to know someone on the spur of the moment..... like meeting out somewhere....... Off the wall, and completely above board...smile

Spur of the moment stuff is terrific, just not when someone is telling you what they would like to do to you in explicit detail and you've never seen them in your life.

I think you are forgetting 2 things. One---the women of CS are very gorgeous....shimmy

and Two----there are a lot of creepy people out there just looking to ermmmm......roll eyes

When I am writing, and I ask someone to write back, I always use hand signals.... I hold my left hand up when I am writing to assure they know I am asking them to write back ...... there could be no confusion......scold

Keep in mind, if a person has their IM on, it doesn't always mean they get the IM.
If they've already closed their profile, the system may take up to 45 mins to recognize their absence, all the while the IM may pop open on your end but not theirs.

If they have stepped away from their computers, obviously any IMs will not be received.

The IMs here are not easy to use. Sending a msg often freezes the ability for the other person to continue typing theirs. These system errors are a regular event & make use of this IM something most are confused by. They may close it, thinking it is broken or not working properly.

They may be in another conversation and your IM is an intrusion, therefore they ignore it. Unfortunately, once the IM setting allows for them, an incoming message can not be prevented. They can be closed but not avoided. (in this case, persistence can be highly annoying... aka, more than two comments)

For some of us, an uninvited IM is rude. It's a bit like walking up to a stranger's house and yelling into their window to try to strike up a conversation, regardless of what they may be doing.
You may find it is better to save that option for once you've already contacted someone.

Try a different system of communication if your IM approach doesn't work.
You have others to choose from for a reason.

wink thumbs up

Ok.... I get the point.... but isnt it tempting to say hello to someone, or having someone say hello completely off the cuff..... or does it always have to be formalized........????

There isn't any confusion, I believe.... because the window opens... it states the window is open.....
So you type away and never get a response...... I do agree with you... however, i am not talking about rejection of an IM, I am talking about an IM connection being verified, with no response..... nothing....
The window opens, you type away, and absolutely no response..........Whats up with that?....dunno

If I remember right, when an IM request comes through it doesn't say who it's from, so we have no idea who it is unless we actually accept it. So like caller id....if we don't recognize who the caller is, we don't answer the phone.

It would be nicer if they put the user name of the sender on the request with a link to their profile so it could be checked out before accepting or declining.
