But Hugsy...I wasn't talking about rights-theory. I was talking about the reality of one's own beliefs - and arguing that the fact that one "personally" holds a given belief says absolutely nothing about it being true or false.
Ambrose2007: If belief is identical to faith, why bother to have two words? I think it incontrovertible that they represent two different concepts - I can believe in something that is powerfully or even irresistibly warranted by evidence, whereas I can have faith in something that has no more evidential force than that I find it appealing. For example, I believe the earth is spherical - no faith required - but may also believe that my life is governed by green octopuses on Mars (which requires faith).
alright, you brought a mind mixer with you
synonymous means same, not identical. Sameness need not be identical and truely identical would be very difficult to find (in anything .. no two snowflakes )
Belief and faith, in my humble opinion are tandum for the "same" purpose; which, can and or may be to conclude an unfulfilled question or fill a vacancy of proof in the mind.
Anything you have evidence of, would be reality me thinks. That would change "I believe" to "I know" ...yes?
You "know" the earth is spherical, not a belief. Faith that is spherical or not would support a belief in either, assuming the reality (the knowing) is not available to you, you see.
belief and faith are tandum
reality and knowledge are tandum .. sameness, not identical
Ambrose2007: You mean it is literally impossible to believe in something that is factually false if one merely calls one's belief religious?? Seriously, D?
Well, my religion literally states that I personally control the workings of the *entire* universe - including your and every person's lives. Still think that is objectively true?
I still say that you're applying apples to oranges. I believe that there is no "objective" truth to religion...only subjective. The only ones who believe that there's an objective truth are the ones who also have to believe that their religion is THE RIGHT ONE...and that doesn't exist. There is no "one truth" or "absolute truth" to religion...but the belief that there is, and that only one is right, has led to many wars.
You're trying to apply "facts" to something that has none...religion is a belief system, not a science.
Ambrose2007: But Hugsy...I wasn't talking about rights-theory. I was talking about the reality of one's own beliefs - and arguing that the fact that one "personally" holds a given belief says absolutely nothing about it being true or false.
Yes but obviously they are my reality...based on my own facts and proof.....because what's right for me...spiritually is not right for everyone else....thus no expectation of everyone to hold the same beliefs as I do....My beliefs are a mixture of a few different belief systems and some of my own which aren't contained in any doctrine or belief system...I don't hold these beliefs simply because I think I am going someplace or I will be rewarded somehow at the end of my life.....I don't know or if I am going anyplace but in the ground....I also don't believe that I will be condemned to hell for being a human being and making mistakes....as long as I live the best life possible....be the best person I can be....be true to who I am and don't intentionally harm others....but I also believe a the same time...no matter what you want to call him...that there is a higher being...I don't worship...I thank....I don't believe in an evil or vengeful god or creator I believe in one who loves...I believe people are in that place (evil)....I believe in karma...that what we give...we truly get back 10 fold in return....these things I believe solely for me....they don't exist except to be placed in anyone elses hearts but my own...they are solely for my spiritual growth...inner peace and growth as a person....I believe everything happens for a reason...I belief in lessons not punishment...for none of these things do I not require proof....because I don't have to and I am not looking to prove anything to anybody but myself....because they are simply what works for me...in my life...and for the path that I am on....
Aries01: I just call myself a Non Denominational Bible based 'Christian' which I know is a bit long winded... .. but like you I have no respect for 'Religious' behaviours... Religious people tend to be 'a la carte' with their faith... and feel the need to engage in overly judgemental over legalistic type practices to compensate... I know a person who is like that.. he knows the Bible inside out, criticises and 'corrects' his fellow churchgoers.... but at the same time displays little compassion on a day to day basis... dunno think Religion (in the conventional sense) is counter-spiritual and has a negative impact on a persons spiritual growth... SummerTimeXOXO: I get so frustrated when I tell people I believe in God and Jesus but I don't believe in religion... in fact I am dead against it all together! It kills, lies and uses the word of God to make millions of dollars.... so..... why is it so wrong to say I am just as much a Christian as anyone else? I have spent years looking into and even attending different churches and religions to see if one of them feels right to me and guess what...... I have come to the conclusion that every religion thinks they are................... "THE RIGHT ONE" "THE REAL ONE" and I'm sorry but if you love God and all your bothers and sisters how can you be so narrow minded? I believe in the bible too but I don't believe in re-writing it so that people today can understand it... leave it as is!!!!! Don't mess with a good thing! I have given up on religion all together but I will not give up on MY FAITH! I just wonder if there are other people out there who feel the same way and if so........ where do we go to be with others who feel the same? Sometimes it's nice to be surrounded by others of the same mentality!
Whilst I am not really religious myself, in religion's defence, I think you'll find that's HUMAN NATURE..... NOT religion per se??!!
giggles1954: wow, Hugz and kissez, you sure have it right! I wish more people thought that way, then maybe there would be more peace on earth.
Thanx giggles...well like I said...since we are all different and from all corners of the world...it only stands to reason that there would not be a one size fits all answer to spirituality or religion for that matter...since this is a personal choice and decision....it obviously has to fit with who we are...where we are going and who we want to become....and that has to be right for the individual....
